This is a show I half love and half hate. I liked the first season but the season after that promised something dark or game-changing but never delivered. I think it was mostly filled with finding the next mcguffin for a lot of episodes. The humans were the weakest part serving as tools to advance the story but never growing as characters. Shame because I can remember at least each character getting their own sentimental moment. They were mostly dropped from the story and it did make the 2nd season a lot better but the payoff wasn't there. I think a transformers show can work without having to force a kid protagonist. Also, it followed after the Michael Bayformers which guaranteed it'd be gimped but it did well with what it had. Alright for what I remember of it.

Its a sequel in the same way prime is to FOC/WFC; its clearly not trying much outside of the two time they referenced prime, and those came much later and were pretty self contained episodes.

the show wasn't really bad, it was mediocre sure but prime wasn't a masterpiece either(though it was better than RID, RID didn't have quality drops like prime did)

The original cartoon isn't bad but isn't exactly groundbreaking, its mostly what you expect until the near ending season 2 where it starts to turn a bit odd in its lore building(season 2/3 has more extremely good/bad episodes as a side effect). Its probably a decent starting point, though current transformers pulls more from season 2 and 3(also the movie).

The original movie is good from what i remember, doesn't really rely on you knowing the original cartoon very much either, its probably the thing pull from the most for current transformers(a lot of the concepts cut from it even became major parts of the lore).

Beast Wars looks ugly these days though it has good writing and animation, Machines has ugly character designs and shits on some of its old characters. Neo/II are basically barely connected and are very anime They're also 2d so it looks better than BW/BM.

Armada is pretty anime and probably not a good starting point because its not very similar to anything but the other japanese shows, also the dubs for this and energon are really fucked up and bad. Fun fact, the dub version of Armada uses a earlier version of animation for its episodes meaning Micron Legend is actually better looking.

Energon and Cybertron are pretty eh and also very anime and not in a good way, i mean in the use stock footage every episode way. Superlink/Energon has its plot completely destroyed in the dub by the way, it also has bad animation most of the time(this does mean full 2D scenes look really nice though).

Headmasters is bad and shits on the stuff before it, it also just has weird shit like friendship lasers. Masterforce is odd but not bad, begins the trend of being really anime for the jap transformers though. Victory is like a normal anime but with robots, i find it fun but not really anything serious.

Zone is an insane mess but also only an OVA. RID 2003/Car Robots is a pretty average anime, its dub is bad.

I'm really mixed on IDW, some comics are really good; and some are total messes with clear poz in them(and some in-between). I don't know if its a good starting point. why is there gay robots? why is there gender bullshit in my robot comics? These are not questions i ever wanted to ask

Prime is a mediocre show, though it doesn't try to stop dark things from happening its not really written well and characters wind up inconsistent sometimes.

I haven't watched Cyberverse so i can't really say anything about it.

Cyberverse is not Aligned, no. Aligned isn't quite dead, though, with Rescue Bots Academy episodes still planned to release throughout 2019 and 2020.

I'm going to forewarn you that Transformers media is mostly mediocre. It's always been much better in concept than execution. The fandom is mainly in it for the toys.

TV shows and movies: Watch all 3 seasons of G1 and the 86 movie.This is the bedrock of the franchise and the well they continue to go back to. Watch Beast Wars, animation is rough but some of the better characters and writing in all of Transformers. Prime and Beast Hunters is all around decent. The Bay movies are horrible, but the robot action and CGI is top notch. Nothing else is really relevant.

Comics: You can try the old Marvel or Marvel UK stuff. The people that read it back in the day really seem to like it. I tried to read a few but it's tough. I found it to be a product of the times and not very timeless. I never read enough Dreamwave, can't comment. I've read most of IDW, skip it. They're rebooting this march start there. The only thing from old IDW continuity I'd recommend is the Wreckers series and one shots.

Vidya: War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron were both fun. Nothing groundbreaking. Devastation was ok. Some of the movie games weren't bad. Revenge of the Fallen was pretty good.

Just a warning, for brainless robot action ROTF and AOE are pretty bad(both are way too long for what they are, moreso AOE which is four hours).

I really don't agree with Prime being standout, its probably not better than most of its contenders(which isn't to say those are much better than decent either.)

I'd actually say animated might be more noteworthy.

Just a note, the other two that canon is usually based off of are marvel(generally for its Shockwave/Ratbat and stuff like Straxus/Jhiaxus; also its the source of the Primus Unicron thing) and beast wars(pretty much 100% for sparks though, which in an off way is gen 1 as it was an aborted concept for the movie).

Its pretty much all gen 1 in a weird way.

From what i remember of marvel it gets progressively less notable effected by its time period(mostly because earth becomes less relevant).

Also the Armada PS2 game is really good, though it doesn't emulate right if i remember correctly.

RoTF has the forest fight which might be one of the CGI sequences ever. Everyone should youtube it at least.I thought about animated but I really feel that Prime is more relevant due to a broader appeal. The armada game was awesome, but I don't know anything about emulating and it's based on Armada which has little relevancy anymore.

A lot of people really liked animated, I wasn't one. If it looks like it may appeal to you go for it. I just don't think it has a lasting impact on the franchise and not necessary for a new fan. I tried to focus on what is most relevant in the Transformers world. The most relevant stuff is somehow related to G1, Beast Wars and the Bay movies.

The armada game is barely related to the anime and stands well by itself really. Series that are over tend to have as much appeal as each other, both armada and prime have decent fan bases stillarmada is 100% due to starscream though.

Animated is an odd case, if it actually lived for a bit longer i have a feeling it would have caused more than it did( it did was make Bulkhead a major character, made Lockdown and influenced Blitzwings character). It almost made Violen Jyger a thing which somehow strikes me as more influencing(to bad it got canceled) before it could.

Its a pretty influencing show really though. Its actually kinda interesting how unique most of its stuff is, the show despite referencing so much actually tries to stand out.

All I know about Transformers is one of the old games didn't let you fight any real Decepticons, only "clones", because defeating one of them might ruin future lore.

They're taking a franchise where the fans are mostly older and invested in the lore, but acting like it's still the 80's and all other media are really just ads for the toys.

I know this is really minor but I always liked that in Armada Megatron's vehicle form was a tank. It fits his warlike personality well.
