>Huge Hellboy fan
>Read Hellboy in Hell and it feels a bit off
>Get to the end and left thinking 'what the hell was that?', pun not intended
>Couple of years later rereading all his works
>Get to little spin off story written by his then 7 year old daughter called 'The Magician and the Snake'
>Monkey king wants a wizard to surprise him
>Only one guy can by sending 3 geometric shapes carved in solid wood away 'to a dark place'
>The Magician should be happy but knows 'one day they will return from that dark place and i will die'
>Hellboy in Hell ends with all the souls leaving hell as visualised by seagulls, the kings of hell are dead and the realm is a ghost town, literally. Hellboy finds a house with a light on and inside finds a room with 3 glowing geometric shapes and recalls the time he was summoned to earth as a baby
>The last issue was his vampire ex wife saying 'to start a new life you must end this one'
>Now know from BPRD that Hellboy wakes up alive on earth after the events in the house
>Assumed at the time it was just a trippy way for mignola to end it while saying something about creature agency and when to let go
>He was actually using something his daughter thought up to explain hellboy ending his life as the beast of the apocalypse, causing the end of hells world, and using the shapes as they begin their journey back to earth to be reborn on earth for the second time but this time under his own agency rather than any prophetic horseshit.
This makes the finale of the series feel more satisfying, which is odd because i thought him coming back in BPRD would be cheap if not for this time 10 pages of less story he drew for his daughter 15 years ago.
