‘The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge’ Will Be An Origin Story
http://archive.is/a5Clm
>“For the first time ever, we’re going to the get to the origin of how little Spongebob met the rest of the Bikini Bottom gang at summer camp,” Soria said during her talk. “The film’s opening will take place at Camp Coral when all of our favorite characters meet for the first time.”
>“The big tentpole movies are our meat and potatoes,” [Mireille Soria] said. “Those have to reach a broad audience. I don’t think we can do 2d movies, to be honest. I think that’s hard.”
<retcon events from the first couple episodes of the show by having spongebob meet all the other characters as children
<very few people or possible none of the show's voice cast involved
Why is this happening?
No.1031357
Am I the only one who hates origin stories? It takes at least half the movie to get everything set up, and more often than not the origin story itself is… well, stupid.
All I need to know about Batman is that his parents were killed in a dark alley and that he took it upon himself to rid Gotham of crime. Do I really want to know how he started wearing a bat costume?
I think origin stories are so popular precisely for that reason: instead of coming up with a story in an existing setting they can just waste half the time with moving pieces into place and then half-ass some plot in the second half of the movie. Basically, half the movie writes itself.
No.1031358
Not like the first movie wasn't a huge retcon on King Neptune's character. But having none of the original cast involved makes no sense.
>>1031357
Everyone's been sick of origin stories for years now. The superhero movie genre pretty much cemented people being sick of it. How many times do we have to be reminded of uncle Ben or the Waynes getting shot? We know already. Even the casual audience knows already. There's no point rehashing an origin story except to do a lazy complete rewrite of a character. See Spider-man Homecoming for that. Sure it doesn't have uncle Ben getting shot but it still is basically just a set up movie for this new Peter.

There's no problem with origin stories. The problem is doing them with origins even the normalist of normalfags know and just simply can't go anywhere beyond their one telling. Just do an opening inner monologue to tell the audience it did happen as expected in this universe. With Batman in particular you could do something mildly creative and start with him cornering Joe Chill and telling his origin briefly before Chill dies, then have Batman follow a clue from the criminal event to the main plot.
Power Pack is obscure enough and their basic origin (Parents get kidnapped by aliens. Heroic alien trying to save them dies and gives them powers to rescue their parents with.) is flexible enough the actual story can be noticeably different (Power Pack Day One did just that). An animated Power Pack movie could easily get away with an origin.

Most of the first season was Spongebob meeting new characters.
He met Mr. Krabs in the pilot, Sandy and Plankton in season one. The only characters that Bobsponge had prior relationships with are Patrick and Squidward.

They can be very good, but people almost always tell them wrong. What you want to do is just tell a new story that takes place early on in that character's life, that influences who they became. MGS3, essentially. Don't just show people what they already know. Don't show us how every character met and how Han Solo got his iconic gun. Doesn't matter. We already know those characters get together. We already know he has those things. That's not a story, you're just reiterating the story we know back at us. Whereas Big Boss hunting his former master in Soviet Russia was a completely new story that was able to have twists and turns and surprise us. There's no "and now I shall build the Metal Gear and establish Outer Heaven moment, apart from a few sly hints. That's how you do it.

The problem with a origin or single character focused movie prequel is that the story is gonna be roughly shown across a linear two hour limit (rough average) while a game can be much longer and have branching paths.

I don't think that's the problem. The problem is the insistence on retreading old ground. The Han Solo movie is an interesting study of this. The good things in that movie were the things you didn't know all ready.
>Young Han had a girlfriend who broke his heart, making him cold.
>young Han formed a father/son like bond with an aged criminal
>young Han was involved in a heist for a powerful mob boss
But then there's
>The Millenium Falcon! Because it's a Han Solo movie
>Lando Calrissian! Because it's a Han Solo movie
>The Kessel Run! It's that thing you've heard of!
And that shit just bogged the movie down. We don't need to see Han winning the Falcon in a game of cards. We know that story. He won it in a game of cards. There you go. Story told. We don't need to see exactly how he beat the Kessel Run in farty blarty blart blart. We know.
The one thing I would have liked them to focus more on was the budding relationship between Han and Chewie, but that got undercut by all of the other shit they shoehorned in there, because Han Solo. Because Millenium Falcon. Action Figure. Thing I recognise. Show it to me again Mommy. Show me that thing I know. It's fucking trite.

Will it be CGI? I feel that the very first 10 minutes of the film or so will show a very young and undeveloped Spongebob who probably can't talk beyond some basic sounds and he will be introduced to Patrick this way, this scene will probably be the only redeeming feature of the movie and will feature a different animation style.

>how he met squidward and patrick
it would take two seconds to say that he moved into the neighborhood because sponges take up their homes in pineapples by nature and the two persons located down the street are a squid, who are shown to take up residence in Moai heads, and a starfish, who are shown to live under rocks. There is quite actually no explicable reason for an origin beyond "We don't know how to move the story forwards, so we'll just go way back and start over."
