I considered making this thread on /v/, but it seemed more relevant for /co/.

A few days ago, InkyPen was announced, an application that seems to take a Netflix approach to comics. The app is also exclusive to the Nintendo Switch for some reason. I've tried to go over the <pros and >cons:

<bigger Switch screen makes reading comics easier than on smartphone while remaining mobile

<could be a way to reintroduce kids to comics if marketed right

<pay a fixed price to freely access "tens of thousands of comics"

>no telling if these comics will remain available indefinitely

>probably means tens of thousands of issues, not series

<not limited to American comics, also offers European comics and manga

<IDW, Valiant and Dynamite confirmed

>not a peep on Marvel or DC

<"webcomic friendly"

>"webcomic friendly"

-team behind the app are a bunch of Norwegians

>with ties to their local indie game scene

>some members of the team are also setting off alarm bells by their looks

I'm not sure what to make of it. Promising concept or giant turd in the making? The implied lack of Big Two support certainly doesn't inspire confidence.

>The implied lack of Big Two support certainly doesn't inspire confidence.

I'm of the opposite opinion. The Big Two are massively inept dumbasses. Hearing that they're staying away from this makes me more interested.

Too bad it's going to still be shit because why the fuck would you focus solely on consoles instead phone/tablet market?

OP I could sound the alarm at just a glance of the staff pic with one of them subbing their appearance with their fursona.

>Valiant comics

That doesn't inspire much confidence, especially with pic related. Ninjack was alright, and Vincent Van Goat makes a great character, but Faith is just… gross on principal alone.

>Not a peep from Marvel or DC

Fucking good. They'd just gouge and crush any other publisher on the platform, not to mention force agendas on kids.

I wouldn't give it any mind. Trying to compete with Comixology's market space with a fucking Nintendo Switch app certainly doesn't indicate any forethought, and the subscription model will undoubtedly limit its selection. Even Comixology caught flak from comic makers when they initially unveiled their own subscription model.

They could be going for the Switch precisely because it's an unexplored medium. On a smartphone they'd be competing with millions of other apps vying for attention in general, and people explicitly looking for comic book readers would be far more likely to go with big name comiXology, which has probably already sated most of the market over there. On the Switch however, they'd stand out as a non-game app, and most of the Switch's userbase probably falls into their target demograph.

That furshit isn't standing in for anyone, it's the company's mascot which is cause for concern in its own way.
