I thought it was pretty clear they were non-humans. I thought the whole lesson was that "not being a human" is still a good thing if you're a good person. Or at least that's what any sane person gets from it.

In 2003, the United States had a tariff on action figures made outside country, with the higher tax being leveled against dolls, which were defined as "human figures". Toybiz, one of Marvel's subsidiaries, argued that the X-Men and the Fantastic Four weren't human, thus should be subject to the lesser tax placed on toys that were "non-human creatures".
