What does it mean to "love your neighbor as yourself?

Luke 10:25-37 CSB — Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? ” “What is written in the law? ” he asked him. “How do you read it? ” He answered, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind;” and “your neighbor as yourself.” “You’ve answered correctly,” he told him. “Do this and you will live.” But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor? ” Jesus took up the question and said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead. “A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. “In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. “But a Samaritan on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion. “He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. “The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back I’ll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.’ “Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers? ” “The one who showed mercy to him,” he said. Then Jesus told him, “Go and do the same.”

I don't really love myself so I always interpreted this to be Jesus telling me to kill people.

>>6169

So I have to kill those who show mercy to me? Pretty dark. I don't think I could do that.

I know it doesn’t mean “love everyone”. I do think there is a implication of proximity to it. And I do think it presumes that predators in the area have been summarily dealt with.

We live in a time where perversion is being sold as good and upstanding people are being sold as evil. We live in a culture sterilized by artificial divisions promoted by the most evil and wicked, who run media.

I’m going down this path because this parable is often used to justify tolerating sodomites. But consider this: if you lived in Egypt when Pharoahs’ heart was darkened by God, would you be justified in hating him? Of course you would; even God hates him. So who are God’s enemies?

2 Chronicles 19:2 And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the LORD? therefore is wrath upon thee from before the LORD.

Well you have to think about what "love" is, from a Christian perspective. If you love someone, you want the best for them. The best thing for anyone is to get to heaven, and the absolute worst thing for anyone is to go to hell. So if I want my gay friend to stop being gay and accept Jesus as his lord and savior, I'm not being hateful at all. I just want the absolute best for him, but if he doesn't see it that way then it doesn't look like I love him.
