How was church today?

At my church we sang some really good hymns. VBS just ended and there were 200 kids every day hearing the gospel.

Our pastor preached through Luke 11. It's really refreshing to hear a preacher that doesn't read one verse and just go away on some vaguely related topic, just shoehorning in the pericope.

My pastor helps us see what the objective of the author was.

What was your sermon about?

Haven't gone to church yet today because I started going to an on-campus church during the school year and they don't operate as much over the summer. So I haven't found a good church in the area yet, but I'm going to be looking for one soon. Today I'll probably just watch Steven Anderson's live stream though, I'm looking forward to that.

I think you should find a church that meets year round and go there even when school is in session

Yeah I'll definitely be needing to do that soon enough, I only have one more semester of college left.

OP of the Sick of the Catholic church thread

I went to mass today. I realized to an extent that my complaints about Catholic sermons were because there is so little lime for Sermons in a Catholic church - the priest gets about 15 minutes and the rest of the time is spent in worship. Worship in church isn't very fulfilling. I went to regular mass, but Latin mass isn't much better - it actually seems worse because no one seems to know the right responses to say at Latin mass.

Wondering if there was actually a decline in the church or if it was a decline in the culture that the church is getting blamed for.

I donno, guess a lot of pondering and thinking. My family is from a very small village and we have been Catholic for hundreds of years. It is a Catholic village, and our family members were responsible for building a big Catholic church in my village and were a big part of the spiritual life there.

Today many have converted to pentecostalism or atheism. In my immediate family it's just mom and me who even believe in God. My extended family runs a pentecostal church and my uncle was the preacher there before he died recently.

I have a lot of questions about the role of Church. Is it supposed to provide spiritual guidance? Is it just a place of worship?

It seems like we as Catholics rely on Catholic schools and classes to teach the faith. Now that that has declined, many don't really know the faith, understand it or follow it.

I donno, lots to think about

I've only made it to church once over the past one and a half years. I'm almost at the point where I can start going regularly again, but my health just isn't quite there yet.

In the meantime I'll just spend the sabbath resting with my family and trying to sanctify the day somehow, even if it isn't ideal.

There's no rule saying Catholic priests are only allowed to give 15-minute sermons. It's just that most of them are so lazy, so intellectually mediocre, or so unable to stand up to impatient parishioners, that that's all they can manage.
