So Anons I finally did it, I went to Catholic Church today. When I was younger my parents never brought me to church despite my interest and strong religious views. So after getting my affairs settled on my own, I was able to attend and I am very excited. Any thoughts or help from Catholics to a new Catholic? I was a tad confused about the call and responses and what to say but that will come with time.

Catholic here. I would give this piece of advice. The Catholic church is a very big and diverse tent - I don't mean just diverse in the sense of race, but that it holds a lot of diverse beliefs, there are charismatic catholics, there are traditionalist catholics, there are eastern churches who split and later joined the Catholic church. It's bigger and more flexible than is presented.

There are alot of liberal orders, like sacred heart and now the Jesuits. There are also conservative orders like the famous Opus Dei and Fraternity of Saint Vincent Ferrer.

Learn to function within that and within that diversity, there is a place for dispute and disagreement but there is no place for sowing discord and strife.

Further, we have alot of traditions and beliefs and rules that go very deep and are very ancient. It's easy to get lost in the traditions, beliefs and catechism and forget about what's important - and what's important is Christ and loving and following Christ and becoming more like him. Don't forget that. Welcome to the faith.

Oh I would add this, there are talks of hating protestants and fighting protestants within Catholic forums - that is something that is not present within the actual Catholic church. We have disagreements with protestants and those disagreements are important but the basis of Catholicism is seeking unity and trying to bring all Christians together under the banner of Catholicism.

Ask your priest about RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) if you have not done so already, this is how you'll be able to receive the sacraments of baptism, confession, communion, and confirmation. Maybe it's different in your country but where I live RCIA classes start in August and last until Easter.

Also I want to give a plug for it because it's my preference but if you are interested, here is where you can find a Traditional Latin Mass near you https://www.latinmassdir.org/ like >>5424 said though if it's not your kind of thing don't sweat it though because there is a place for everyone in the Church. God bless and welcome to the faith, brother!
