The lady at the leasing office made a mistake and I'm paying $170/month less than what they intended. I have a three bedroom apartment, but we're paying the two bedroom rate.

Today I gave my first rent check and she noticed the mistake. She knocked on the door and asked me to resign a lease with the corrected amount, and pay the difference. I declined because I've already signed for the lower amount. She tried to guilt me by saying she would have to personally pay the difference, but I still declined. Giving her the benefit of the doubt (that she wasn't simply lying about her liability), I encouraged her to look into that because I'm confident the employer can't do such a thing.

Was this right, to not get suckered in to paying more? Is this being "shrewd as snakes"?

No useless platitude answers please.

>is deceit okay as long as it is in my favor?

The fact that youre even asking the board is proof enough that the holy spirit is trying to get you to do the right thing.

Where is the deceit?

>>3813

Why am I not innocent?

I signed a lease to pay one amount. She's asking me to raise the amount because she made a mistake.

>Why am I not innocent?

Good point, i would say this is more of a legal question than a moral one, Find out if the owner does have to make up the difference.

46d7cb  No.3818

Or just find out the general legality of what happened.

what about being just and merciful?

>I have a three bedroom apartment, but we're paying the two bedroom rate.

You saw the mistake, kept quiet about it, and are now reaping the benefits on their error.

Is $170 worth souring a relationship over?

How would you feel if the shoe was on the other foot?

Why even ask us if youre not openminded to the possibility that what you did was wrong?

Think of it this way, you wouldnt have posted anything if you didnt feel the tiny twinge of guilt deep down about what you did.

I'm interested but I'm not seeing any explanatory answers

No.

>I dont understand.

You were not merciful

>Im not seeing any answers

Does the parable of the unmerciful servant ring a bell?

E x p l a n a t o r y

Why does mercy involve breaking a contract in your view?

Let's say I buy a burger for $1, eat it, and the server comes back and says it should have been $2. Am I obligated to give up another dollar? What is the moral difference here?

What if he is simply lying?

I'm asking here because I believe there might be a good, biblical, exegetical argument against my current position but I'm not finding it in any replies.

>>3822

No, he didn't

Let's "put the shoe on the other foot" as is productive in moral investigation. A tenant steals all the furniture from a rental property. This is a violation of the lease contract. Should the Christian lessor just forget about it?

The biblical answers are there my friend, you just dont want to forgive her mistake and agree to pay the extra amount that is rightfully owed by your own admission in the original post.

Youre currently trying to weasel out of it by relying on the law, mans law to be specific, as some pharisees did about 2000 years ago.

The christian thing to do would be to forgive her mistake and pay what is owed. Dont be surprised if she turns around and hires some slick lawyer to turn it around on you and potentially get you evicted.

Forgive and move on friend.

I have to ask since you didnt answer one of the previous posters but, are you a christian?

6e7df1  No.3832

>>3825

I am Christan.

> the extra amount that is rightfully owed

By every reasonable standard I owe nothing. That is not even alleged by the lessors.

The question is if I have some moral obligation to act in charity to give up $2000 over a year, made gray because she claimed that she's personally liable (basic search says this is illegal).

You're being very insulting for how little you understand the situation

6e7df1  No.3833

It might be a bad deal from their perspective, I have no way of knowing their profit margins

Render unto Caeser, friend.

I apologize if you took my admonishing as insulting. Im simply trying to get you to recognize the folly in allowing something as silly as money to guide your moral compass instead of what Jesus preached.

Forgive her mistake and move on.

You're missing the point, the moral answer is you're gaining from someone's mistake, you're not suppose to be paying less. The legal answer will tell you your options.
