"You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth"
But some paragraphs later God commands cherubs to be sculpted for the ark, and cherubs embroidery for the tabernacle mantles.
Wouldnt this make it that we arent to carve false idols like the golden cow but that things pertaining to God are legitimate?

This directive was a law BEFORE the incarnation. Yet lo and behold, God did come in a definitive image: Christ.
That's the justification for icons: The Incarnation. We're not following laws made 2000 years before Christ. We're living in a world where God finally came in a flesh.
As for the cherubs, they were never revered or claimed to be gods or God.

Three things:
1. The Ark of the Covenant was not an idol, nor was the tabernacle mantle;
2. Cherubim are thought to be here with us, guarding Eden from human entry, not in heaven above or in the earth beneath;
3. Most generally, the command to create an object is not a command to worship that object.

Only the Son came in flesh yet the Father is depicted also.
