are we rewarded (in this life) for living virtuously? or perhaps kept from being rewarded too much?

the most upright and devout man that I ever knew was killed recently. this was after a life of much suffering. he had probably the hardest life of anyone that I ever knew. I always thought that he was like a modern Job, that everything would eventually be returned to him. but nope.

it seems that some suffering is good for us, so that we don't become comfortable and decadent, but it just seems too much in this case. not that I question God's wisdom, but rather, I don't understand the logic. is there a rhyme or reason to this?

>rewarded

it's interesting how you use the word "rewarded", here. I think my conception of what rewards are has changed over time, partly from getting older, but mostly i think from God changing what that word means to my heart.

it's hard to say whether this person was rewarded or not. there are a lot of people in the bible for instance who have prayed to be together with God.

I have made that prayer before. I don't think it's even a not holy prayer, even, to pray something like that. There is nothing really in the world that is worth being in the world for. Being with God is better. Perhaps God allowed him to do this, as a reward for his good and faithful service.

As i get older, there is a changing of the heart that occurs also…as far as my own connection to the world and how much desire and attachment i have for the things in it.

If you have not yet, i would highly recommend reading the Way of the Little Flower, the book - the autobiography of st. therese of lisieux. She lived also a life in the manner you describe.

she prays at times that God would grant to her the grace of suffering.

God is very wise, and all knowing and all Good. Remember also God is personal, and He can help you to work out some of these questions on your own, with just You and Him directly, via prayer. You might pray also about why God showed to you a life like this man's, and for wisdom to understand the purpose of him showing to you this thing.

>are we rewarded (in this life) for living virtuously?

Not very likely. Even our Lord didn't have that for himself. And if you do happen to be blessed, know that it was for nothing you did yourself. But a grace. Just give thanks to God and understand it all could end too.. for no fault of your own necessarily.

There are certain specific things that get you rewarded in this life. If you're white or Christian the powers that be have been brainwashing full force to make those virtues unintuitive to you. It's so bad many good people are probably physically doomed unless they have direct counsel from an angel or Saint.
