I’ve always envied the Christian capacity for hope since my childhood, but I’ve never found myself with that ability. From a Christian standpoint, did some aspect of my childhood just turn me over to a reprobate mind, or would I just be in the Calvinist sense honked from the start?

you are still alive, there is still hope for salvation. "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new." 2 Cor. 5:17

I was similar to you, where I had little to no faith from childhood. I was called many times throughout my life, but only partially answered. Given where I am now, partial answers rather than a full effort were the biggest mistakes I ever made. Don't make the same mistakes I did. Go full on toward God and sustain it. It is the most important thing you can do in your life. He will answer if you keep at it.

Start praying. Do it every day. Don't stop. No matter how hard it is, don't stop. Take the time and do it right. I recommend saying the rosary with meditation, though you may need to build up to that.

Beg forgiveness for and eliminate sin from your life, particularly mortal sin. Below is an examination of conscience to examine mortal sins in your life.

Start watching Youtube videos and reading to learn the faith. Go to God. The two sources I'd recommend are the Sensus Fidelium channel, particularly those from Father Ripperger, on Youtube and the long Fulton Sheen catechism series.

Fulton Sheen

God calls everyone, though demons can block your ability to properly hear / act on it. Fight through. When you pray, eliminate sins and work to go to God, he will answer.

I repeat, this is the most important thing you can do in your life. Fight through and get there. Don't bother listening to protestants, fight through to traditional Catholic life.

No, but I was once a pessimist and an irreligious person. Christian hope is, like other Christian values a forced attitude. A Christian starts hoping for one reason or another, and then discovers that not only is hope good and enjoyable, but that they can always hope, no matter how bad it gets.

The thing that got me, was that I realized that there was no reason not to hope in God. That moment marked my conversion.

>did some aspect of my childhood just turn me over to a reprobate mind

Calvinist here. That's not how reprobation works. The doctrine of reprobation is literally the same thing as not being elected to salvation. I can't imagine that a reprobate would have the mental faculties to know that they're reprobate, unless they're a fallen angel or something and have been explicitly told such. You can only know when you're definitely not a reprobate–if you're effectually called, then by definition you are not reprobate.

You could sit there brooding over the unknown, or you could do what these other guys are suggesting… Reach out to God until He answers. The mechanics of salvation are the concern of people who are already Christian. If you aren't, then the only thing you need to care about is making peace with your Creator before the sand runs out of your hourglass. You've heard the good news? If so, then obey it.
