ICP kept me on the right track at a time in my life when I had rejected God completely.
They used violent music to reach out to people who were at their lowest point in life, and underneath the violence was a recurring theme of choosing good over evil. At a time when I had no beliefs that would have stopped me from being an evil piece of shit, they exhorted me to not be that way.
They told a story of a carnival that would come and bring judgement to the world, and each album was themed around a certain avenue to sin, like greed or envy, with stories about the worst offenders being punished for refusing to change their ways.
When they finally announced on the last song of the last album of the story that the carnival had been their analogy for God, and encouraged their fans to seek him, it was a huge deal. There was a schism between fans who always knew the message was about being good, and fans who just liked the violence. Some people, who were butthurt at being told to seek God, turned on the band completely. ICP was fully aware that it would cause division, and that's why they sang, "We're not sorry if we tricked you." They were jubilant at finally revealing themselves to be on the side of God. It was a pleasure to see them so happy at that stage in their journey, they were blissful.
God led me back to him in due time. And I'll thank God for the rest of my life for using music and ICP to keep me from straying too far.
I know there are others who were helped in the same and other ways. We became a family to each other. It was common back then to hear a fan say, "ICP saved my life." They reached out to the scum that nobody else wanted and encouraged them to get better.
