The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

My irreligious father accepted the cable/internet guy coming on a Sunday to install a new cable box and modem for the house. Am I morally obligated not to use the internet and TV? My brother insists it's a gray area because strictly speaking I don't have anything that I didn't already have prior, and while I can sort of see his point, he's irreligious too and possibly an Islamophile. Any advice, gentlemen?

Well your father is irreligious so don't be surprised when he gets somebody to work on Sunday.

As for you, OP you aren't morally obliged to do anything. You can watch your father's television/use his internet that he pays for (I assume), but if you have hours on end to waste in front of a screen you could use that time to better yourself. You could pray the rosary or volunteer at church. You can study for school or study your faith. You can buildup your temple and lift. You can do lots of other things than watch a screen.

If anything be a good example for your family and pray. Pray the rosary for them every day multiple times a day

Yeah, the actual use of television and internet is not something I want to be excessive (though I am distinctly lacking in the case of the latter). My real concern is whether I am taking advantage of something that should not have been done by using the internet or television and if it would now be sinful to do so.

I hate to break it to you but there are people working at power plants every Sunday. People working at water treatment plants and sewerage plants. People working at your ISP and phone company.

So if you want to go hard line on this it's going to get pretty rough.

Even if I agreed to your reasoning, isn't it still an obligation for any Christiam to follow Christ's teachings no matter how "rough" it gets? I'm not saying the example in this thread is one that we should fully commit to, but chickening out of something dictated to us simply because it's hard is definitely a sin in my experience.

Tbh I was always taught that we should avoid unnecessary work on Sundays.

When I was a kid my mother worked at a dairy and she explained to me that if there weren't workers there on Sundays to process it basically lots of food would go to waste. Of course all of office workers at that company would have a day free as their work could just wait until Monday without such consequences.

Some jobs are a matter of health. I'm pretty sure Jesus said to do those jobs. Cows can get ill from not being milked twice a day. Power plants charge hospitals for people on life support. Maybe there could be another way but there certainly isn't one right now. I still strongly support not working (and not shopping) on Sundays for everything else.

It comes down to remembering that the Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. (Mark 2:27).

>Remember that thou also didst serve in Egypt, and the Lord thy God brought thee out from thence with a strong hand, and a stretched out arm. Therefore hath he commanded thee that thou shouldst observe the sabbath day.

(Deuteronomy 5:15)

The rest is not just for God but for one's self. To focus on God, family etc. when work may have pulled one to lesser concerns. It's useful and convenient for everyone to do this on the same day, but for those who must work to keep the wheels turning, they should still take a day off to focus on what is most important.

The sabbath is not a burden, but a rest from burden.
