This man and his congregation were arrested for "inciting subversion of state power" which carrie a 15 year prison sentence. He has been a long time critic of Chinese authoritarianism as an academic but only converted to Christianity in 2005.

Just a reminder that if you don't believe in God, there is no higher authority that the state to appeal to.
