The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I'm considering converting to Christianity. I wanted to start by building virtue and reading St Ignatius' 'Spiritual Exercises' and implement his advice in the next month or so. But after learning about prelest I'm worried that demons might turn me prideful after I begin my journey. What's the correct attitude I should have towards prayer? How can I avoid demons and false visions?

Go on in the spiritual life like so: get a spiritual father and obey him, reject all apparition claiming god , don't even test them, serve others and don't retaliate against the biggest violent attack or the smallest insult, debate no one, don't be attached to your own opinions, pray the litany of humility. These are all common pieces of saintly advice, it works.

>don't even test them

That's not what the Scripture says…

I know what it says, it's just also commonly said to not even answer or question a spirit, it's probably best.

Priests and pastors are prime candidates, advanced laymen also who will accept a mentoring relationship

Eastern "Orthodoxy" (Heresy) is the definition of prelest. They are all heretics and spiritually deluded. I have no idea why any Catholic calls them merely schismatic. Every single one of them rejects Unam Sanctam and therefore they are all heretics. Unam Sanctam is infallible and dogma, rejection of dogma makes you a heretic. There is nothing "orthodox" about a group that says one of the greatest sins of all mankind, artificial birth control, is permitted.

St. Ignatius had a strong devotion to Our Lady. Pray the Litany of Humility often and don't worry about visions or locutions. If God intends for you to know something you will come to know it. Remember how Peter experienced the same vision 3x in Acts and read how he reacted.

O Jesus! meek and humble of heart, Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed,

Deliver me, Jesus.

From the desire of being loved…

From the desire of being extolled …

From the desire of being honored …

From the desire of being praised …

From the desire of being preferred to others…

From the desire of being consulted …

From the desire of being approved …

From the fear of being humiliated …

From the fear of being despised…

From the fear of suffering rebukes …

From the fear of being calumniated …

From the fear of being forgotten …

From the fear of being ridiculed …

From the fear of being wronged …

From the fear of being suspected …

That others may be loved more than I,

Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.

That others may be esteemed more than I …

That, in the opinion of the world,

others may increase and I may decrease …

That others may be chosen and I set aside …

That others may be praised and I unnoticed …

That others may be preferred to me in everything…

That others may become holier than I, provided that I may become as holy as I should…

Prayer by St. Ignatius

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,

my memory, my understanding,

and my entire will,

All I have and call my own.

You have given all to me.

To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will.

Give me only your love and your grace,

that is enough for me.

Well the traditional catholic position would be that many EO or other people are under a form of spiritual delusion. Heyachism was strongly looked down on and considered heretical and probably opening you up to demonic forces and so on. Of course post V2 all they can do is praise heretics and spit on "traditionalists" but you already know the score there. Doesn't change the fact that all heretics go to hell and also doesn't change that every single "Eastern Orthodox" is a heretic, because they reject Unam Sanctam. I don't know how this meme of "schismatics" is around in the 21st Century.

In fact even during the actual schism, if they claimed that the Filioque was "heretical", that itself makes them heretics. But Unam Sanctam makes it explicitly clear that every single EO is a heretic. If you accept Unam Sanctam, then you are an Eastern Catholic, not an EO.
