The text was used in numerous passages of both the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures throughout history, including:
"Then came the Israelites after the sea, the inhabitants of that wilderness, out of the land of Egypt, who came upon the face of the land, to have their sanctuary, in the sight of the Lord: and the land was filled up with houses. It was a great building, and a marvelous work. And its door was in the wilderness, out of the hand of man." Luke 2:1-18.
" And when Jesus was preaching, a man came up and said to him, Master, my brother is sick, and he is no longer able to carry his cross into the kingdom of heaven. What will be the use of my tares to put my brother's sicknesses under? I will give them to the poor." Luke 17:36.
"For I knew your work, that you had done that which was expected of you; and if I wanted more, I would have done it myself, I would have said, 'You will become a judge by what you do, and a king by what you say.'" 1 John 2:14.
Luke 2:20-21. In the following verse John uses the expression, for the purpose of expressing that Jesus is in heaven. I doubt if this is a translation error. As with the others before it, the expression "on the cross" means to be present in heaven. This is a phrase which suggests that Jesus is present there. Jesus's disciples have been called to take a cross to represent their witness to the truth, but it was not intended for them to bring about their own death. There was no point in the disciples bringing Jesus to death, for they would have been killed with him. Now, the cross is being used as an expression of devotion to the Son of God, but to use it for anything other than that is a translation distortion.
"If ye be not with me, ye shall be against me": (John 8:35; see also Luke 4:17,18,18c), an expression for what it said: "For as many as follow me shall be with me in spirit" (Eph. 2:2). These same verses make an important point: if one does not believe in the divinity of Jesus, then one is against him. A person is against a man who does not believe in Satan's work.
