I have visited them many times over the years for woodworking projects. I like them, but caution people against idealizing them. Strengths: Family bonds, lots of children, children are very well behaved in public, live in the country, make things with their hands.
Weaknesses: I’ve heard about sexual assault of children. Probably happens to women, too. This is a problem everywhere though. The women are frumpy. I’m guessing because they don’t exercise or work as much outdoors. Wish they’d let them go for a run or something. Other downside is genetic problems because the communities are so closed off. I’ve heard about non Amish bulls being allowed to impregnate the women. The act takes place with elders watching, there’s a sheet between the pair, and no one is allowed to act like they enjoy it (no moaning). It’s supposed to be cold and clinical, like a medical procedure. I don’t know if this really happens or how often though, but considering the generic problems it probably does.
