How literally should we take the mark of the beast?

Not at all. You have that mark as long as you participate in the politics and culture of the world, and are a member of Babel. The antichrist is in you. Sure, some literal things will almost certainly happen (resurrections, last judgement, physical human antichrist), but all this mark stuff, being concerned about it now, is all worthless. Follow Christ. It's better for someone to not be born than to concern themselves with the things below, above, in the past, or future.

I'm pretty sure the Mark will be very explicit in making you deny Christ, in exchange for citizenship and survival.

The number 666 is in roman numerals, "DCLXVI", which stands for "Domitianus Caesar Legatos Xti Violenter Interfecit", meaning "Domitianus Caesar vilely killed the envoys of Christ". The original number, however, found in the oldest versions of the text, have the number 616, "DCXVI", wich takes the word "Legatus" out and leaves "Domitianus Caesar vilely killed Christ". The presence different numbers in different texts show that the copyists didn't care so much about the number but its meaning, remembered the later and not exactly the former and thus changed it by error from 616 to 666.

Now, how's Domitianus Caesar? Could be Nero, who was born under the name Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus (changed his name when Claudius adopted him as a successor), or it could be emperor Domitian, who also persecuted Christians. Given the years of their reigns, both Nero and Domitian are contemporary to Saint John. It could be ambiguous on purpose to refer to both. In any case, when you read Revelation 13, it becomes apparent the beast is a powerful governor, who the people adore as a god, who's autocratic and unopposed. The second beast that comes kills everyone who refuses to adore the effigy of the first one (much like Christians were persecuted cause they refused to adore the emperors as gods). And there's also: "And he [the second beast] shall make all, both little and great, rich and poor, freemen and bondmen, to have a character in their right hand, or on their foreheads. And that no man might buy or sell, but he that hath the character, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name." (Revelations 13:16-17). Those who do not think (forehead) or act (right hand) as the governor wants see themselves excluded from public life and society, much like Christians of the time. There's also the fact that the beasts serve the Dragon (Satan), come in succession (like a dynasty) and come after Christ, whose coming appears in Revelation 12.

>How literally should we take the mark of the beast?

As a number? Non literally. The beast is not gonna carry a sign saying "Hey, I'm the servant of Satan, come join me in eternal damnation!". The beast is an earthly power, is the autocratic state who people worship as if it was a god, is the dictatorial governor who turns people away from Christ. The followers of the beasts carry the mark in their thoughts and in their actions, not in their physical foreheads and hands. The two beasts are the tow kind of evil governors that can arise: the first beast is a mixture of aggressive predatory animals and directly wages war against he followers of Christ, and the second beast has features of a lamb, but the voice of a dragon, and has different methods. It establishes a culture and a religion around the previous beast tricking the inhabitants of Earth into abandoning Christ.

"Here is wisdom. He that hath understanding, let him count the number of the beast; for it is the number of a man: and his number is Six hundred and sixty and six." (Revelation 13:18). True Christians (who have understanding) will recognize the beast.

I don't recall the number being associated with the Lapsi, but I get your point.

Not literally at all, the term "beast" seems to me to be theologically significant, connoting animalism, perversity, base passions etc. This seems to be how everyone uses it even in the evangelical circles which have an end-times fascination, viz. hundreds of /x/ tier videos about the Satanism implicit in pop-culture music. Is it legitimate? Well, pop-music these days will ruin your soul, so yes, but that's as literal as it gets.

The terminology of having the number on your forehead and right hand likely refers to Jewish understanding/symbolism of accepting & holding God's law to oneself, a few verses in the old testament mention this like exodus 13:9. (additional verses mentioned in video at 34:33). Meaning the mark of the beast refers to the replacing of God's law rather than the literally physical marking on the hand or head many think of it today.

For my own question: Does anyone know where the upside down & upright pentagram came from & it's relationship with Christianity over the centuries? I'm seen it used on some church architecture in the past and know that the inverted one was given it's dark connotations by some magician in the 1800s, but that's about it.

>Domitianus Caesar vilely killed the envoys of Christ

I'm going to call bullshit on this. Do you have any ancient source saying that this is the case? Does any early Church Father give this meaning?

I could only find cringey conspiracy websites with this meaning.

Please prove me wrong Anon, or is this just a folk etymology?

I could easily imagine a scenario of world wide war and natural disasters where a One World Government pops up offering relief supplies and medical assistance but insists on allegiance and their mark/barcode tattoo to make sure stuff gets "fairly distributed".

> Do you have any ancient source saying that this is the case?

The number 616 appeared in the Oxyrhynchus Papyri, which ancient sources could not know of since they were discovered in the late 1800s early 1900s. The DCLXVI number is a theory, but a pretty likely one. Greek isopsephy and jewish gematria both work giving values to letters, and the letters in Nero Caesar have the value 666. Whatever the case, the Antichrist has always been considered to be a ruler, which makes the theory that 666 (or 616) refers to a ruler stronger.

Literal. It seems bizarre, but it's going to manifest given how things are. People are embracing Satan "ironically" right now.

I don't think it is literal, but 666 will be the gemmatria of AntiChrist's name. However the mark of it is bowing down to liberalism. Thats why he said on your hand (your actions) or your forehead (your thoughts). Even right now we see if you don't accept the globohomo liberal positions you can lose your job, be kicked out of school, bank account terminated, paypal terminated and so on. You cannot buy or sell without submitting to liberalism.

Since the "mark of the beast" has been "proven" to be everything from credit cards to pacemakers, I wouldn't take it to seriously.
