The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is quoted by saying:

>Christianity is called the religion of pity.—Pity stands in opposition to all the tonic passions that augment the energy of the feeling of aliveness: it is a depressant. A man loses power when he pities. Through pity that drain upon strength which suffering works is multiplied a thousandfold. Suffering is made contagious by pity; under certain circumstances it may lead to a total sacrifice of life and living energy—a loss out of all proportion to the magnitude of the cause (—the case of the death of the Nazarene).

However, Paul says in 2 Corinthians 12:10-11

> 10. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

> 11. I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing.

But in all honesty, I have a hard time trying to be happy. Just last week, I got straight As on all my grades; not only that but I possibly have a 4.0 GPA. The problem is I don't know who deserves the credit: me who has worked so hard on them, or God, to whom I prayed for help. It's like the "thanking God but not the doctor" scenario. Tell me brethren, is it wrong to take pride in your accomplishments or be confident in yourself?

Well, if we have free will doesn't that mean we can take credit for our actions?

If not for the Lord you wouldn't have air in your lungs. All that is done is done ad maiorem Dei gloriam. For this reason we ought to remain humble, for pride is not only undue, but unjust.

When thanking God or a Doctor, the answer is both. When it's something you have done, always thank God for the opportunity and insight.

Yes you can take credit for your actions but giving the glory to God would be better.

>got straight As on all my grades

Mate be happy for yourself, YOU did that. When it comes to your achievements you should be 'proud'. Not arrogant or self-righteous, and without comparing yourself to others who may achieve more or less than you in certain areas, but confident in your own abilities. In fact you should encourage yourself to be confident in your gifts, because if you are confident in yourself and believe that you are competent, then you will boldly and comfortably use your gifts and abilities to serve others. If you don't allow yourself to have that self-confidence then you will be too timid to serve others because you will think that you aren't good enough - IMO that timid mindset is a more prideful one than the confident mindset, because it makes you want to avoid failure for fear of looking bad. With that mindset you will not produce good works in the same way you would if you allowed yourself some confidence in your abilities.

Remember also that every achievement is a gift from God and we should be humble and thankful for everything as >>810228 said. Who put in the hard work, the hours of study and reasoning to pass your exams? You did, so be glad of that. Who gave you the strength and the will to do it? God did, so be thankful for that. You know this already but always rely on the Lord to guide you and develop you and be satisfied that what he gives you is sufficient for you, whether you succeed or fail in earthly pursuits. Give thanks in prayer and pray to Him for a humble confidence that He can use for His glory, and to keep you from temptations to self-righteousness and arrogance.

Obviously I don't know you but I expect that you can receive what I'm saying in good faith and can discern between confidence and arrogance in yourself. The fact that you are asking the question in the first place is a good sign I think because it shows that you are self-aware and you don't want to let your thoughts go unchecked.

Congrats on the grades fren, God bless you

Pride comes before the fall. Whatever you do, always store your treasures in heaven. Memento mori.

Here's another nietzche quote

Œdipus, the murderer of his father, the husband of his mother, Œdipus, the interpreter of the riddle of the Sphinx! What does the mysterious triad of these deeds of destiny tell us? There is a primitive popular belief, especially in Persia, that a wise Magian can be born only of incest: which we have forthwith to interpret to ourselves with reference to the riddle-solving[Pg 75] and mother-marrying Œdipus, to the effect that when the boundary of the present and future, the rigid law of individuation and, in general, the intrinsic spell of nature, are broken by prophetic and magical powers, an extraordinary counter-naturalness—as, in this case, incest—must have preceded as a cause; for how else could one force nature to surrender her secrets but by victoriously opposing her, i.e., by means of the Unnatural? It is this intuition which I see imprinted in the awful triad of the destiny of Œdipus: the very man who solves the riddle of nature—that double-constituted Sphinx—must also, as the murderer of his father and husband of his mother, break the holiest laws of nature. Indeed, it seems as if the myth sought to whisper into our ears that wisdom, especially Dionysian wisdom, is an unnatural abomination, and that whoever, through his knowledge, plunges nature into an abyss of annihilation, must also experience the dissolution of nature in himself. "The sharpness of wisdom turns round upon the sage: wisdom is a crime against nature"

Talking about incest as the way to true knowledge, he is a pervert weirdo who cares about him

Nietzsche was such a tool, but fairly consistent in his atheism. Of course, why pity or allow for weakness, if all that matters is wealth and money? Nietzsche is the sum total of the man that believes that peace is but the absence of war, rather than the truth of the Gospel, which affirms war to be the absence of Peace.

Now speaking of peace, my humble solution to your problem is this; thank God for the courage, the consolations, and the peace of heart that allowed you to pull off the great work. Once you have done with that, celebrate with all your heart.

Nietzsche also believed that the basis for female sexuality was first wanting to have sex with their mothers, then realising that their fathers had sex with their mothers, then wanting to have sex with their fathers, then realising that all men had penises, so any man would do.

wisdom comes from God, including the wisdom required to get good grades.

Exodus 28:3

Tell all the skilled workers to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as priest.

But it did take your energy and effort so really it is a mix of both your energy and God's gifts and guidance. Tell me, does a boxer say that his work is merely the result of his trainer and not his own hard work? Would a boxer say it was all his hard work, but give no thanks to his trainer? Not usually; If he is being honest, his success is the result of both, and so both will receive credit, (although I would argue it is truer in a deeper sense to lean on the side of humility and give the glory to God).

There is nothing wrong with being happy for achievements, but to say "i'm better than everyone, i'm the best" causes trouble. Now this can actually be a literally true statement sometimes people are on average better than others at certain things, but deep down saying it tends to imply things that are not true, and for that reason alone you should not say it. There is a way to enjoy successes, and it is not by braggadocios statements. Not that i'm saying you're braggart, but if you're not cautious, who wouldn't do a little bragging here and there.

There is a right way to enjoy successes, when you discover and test these things you will understand - it's not stupid and it works well. One day God will help you discern it for yourself. Probably.

The LORD gave us the freedom, it is always our choices that path our lives and our LORD Jesus Christ is our guide. There is nothing wrong with taking pride.

Also on the question of happiness. Being happy and in comfort all the time is a false, this is some western budhism new-age illusions. It is trough suffering where we grow as people, all great inventions came trough suffering. If you put a lot of effort into your live happiness wil follow, dont look for happiness because happiness is a by-product of a fulfilled and passionate live. And dont try to avoid pain and discomfort all the time, accept them as something that happens and be brave. God bless you.

>The problem is I don't know who deserves the credit: me who has worked so hard on them, or God, to whom I prayed for help.

You both do! You worked hard, and prayed hard, and God seeing your piety assisted you in life. Be happy, but don't be vain! It's ok to be happy about what you and God together have accomplished in your life.
