The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Is it possible for the grace of God to be on someone and for them not to be aware of it? Other than Christians when they are sleeping?

Yes, in my 35 years heathen past, I received gifts of grace from God, without knowing where they came from. The Highest had a plan right from the start.

Is it possible for someone to die with the grace of God on them and for them not to be aware of it?

There is no way to know.

Where is this formalized in Christianity? Two perspectives (Catholic and Protestant) come to mind:

-Catholic statements that salvation could exist outside the Church through some “unsearchable divine mystery”

-Romans 2 and the whole notion of an “invisible church.”

I recall also reading in patristics that some form of Christianity could be found among the nations even before the time of Christ. Anyone have any further leads?

THIS.

also, scripture verifies:

>Matthew 28:18-20 (OSB)

"And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, 'All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, /even/ to the end of the age.' Amen."

Concerning Matthew 28:20, OSB provides this footnote:

28:20 Christ Himself is present in each believer and in the church always, both personally and in the Holy Spirit, for neither can be separated from the other. To the end of the age does not by any means imply that we will be separated from Him at the end of the world. He is with us now, and forever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
