Hello, I recently came back to my old church that I might tread the path of redemption. The KJV and NKJV bibles in circulation in the congregation seem to be a lot harder to comprehend than I remember. I fear all these years of targeted smartphone ads and videos that only last for an instant or two have done a number on my ability to focus, read, comprehend, and learn from walls of text like those found in scripture.

So, I ask you, /christian, is there a translation of the bible you might recommend for me? I have compared the Christian Standard Bible and Modern English Version to the KJV, and found them to be at least acceptable in terms of readability, but I am looking for outside perspectives and second opinions before I make up my mind.

Isn't the NIV rather easy to read? But I've seen that it paraphrases rather than translate, in some points.

Either of HCSB/NABRE would fit the bill well. NIV actually made some pretty good translation choices for its day, I don't know why it gets knocked so often.

It's the old style of wording and how the sentences are arranged that gets me - it's strange seeing how much language has evolved since that was translated!

Maybe it's not necessarily the paraphrasing itself that gets me so much as how my style of reading has adapted to material I've been viewing. When reading KJV I tend to read the words faster than I can put them together coherently, and once I'm done with a passage I have to go back and cherry pick when I ask myself "What did that mean?". I used to be able to read huge walls of text - reports, biblical passages, etc. and make informed observations on what I had read without having to go back over it two or three times, such is no longer the case.

I'm just wondering if there's an accurate translation out there that may be more suited to me.

Gotta go with NIV too. I'm reading it right now and it's actually fun and doesn't feel like a choire like so many other translations I tried before.

Read a NAB or NIV or "Good News" version if you will. I've delved into so many English translations for decades now and keep going back to the KJV. And I would ultimately recommend it and hopefully you eventually do "graduate" to it. But I'm not going to point out all of the faults of the NIV, for example. It still has enough of the Word of God to benefit people. Errors are there, but if a person doesn't know of them, it's not going to affect them. "Ignorance is bliss" is my new rule.
