The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I need help understanding how Jesus was crucified on Friday, but yet he said "3 days and nights." Was he really crucified on Wednesday? Pls explain.

Where does Wednesday come from? Mark says it was it the day before the Sabbath (Jewish Sabbath starts Friday evening…all of their days begin at evening. The crucifixion was during the previous hours on Friday. Hence, "Good Friday").

"And when evening had come, since it was the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, Joseph of Arimathea, a respected member of the council, who was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus." - Mark 15:42,43

Didn't he rise from the dead on Monday?

Resurrection Sunday. And Jesus never said he would be gone for 3 days. He said he'd rise the third day. Friday -Day 1 - Saturday - Day 2 - Sunday - Day 3.

"From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised." - Matthew 16:21

I heard from someone else about Wednesday, that was their explanation anyway. But I didn't realize the nights were actually seen as the start of the day.

In Hebrew traditions, Day starts in the evening. So in modern terms, Midnight.

Wednesday - Crucified

Thursday - Removed and Entombed

Thursday Night - (Dead 1 Day)

Friday - Entombed

Friday Night - (Dead 2 days)

Saturday - Entombed

Saturday Night - (Dead 3 days)

In the middle of the night, the beginning of the Sabbath, Christ Rose from the dead.

>And Jesus never said he would be gone for 3 days

The confusion for me came from Matthew 12:40.

A day started at 7pm, not midnight.

Thursday evening (Friday): Last Supper.

Thursday night to Friday morning (Friday): Jesus is arrested and tried, first by the Jews, then by the Romans.

Friday (Friday): Jesus is crucified, at about 9am.

Friday (Friday): Darkess falls upon Jerusalem, at about noon.

Friday (Friday): Jesus dies on the cross, at about 3pm. He is then buried. One day.

Friday evening (Saturday): Jesus lies in the tomb, while the Jews eat the Passover. One night.

Saturday (Saturday): Jesus remains in the tomb. One day.

Saturday evening (Sunday): Jesus remains in the tomb. One night.

Sunday (Sunday): Jesus rises from the dead. One day. The disciples later find out.

So really, Jesus remained in the tomb for 3 days and 2 nights… But "3 days and 3 nights" is a way of speaking, it doesn't have to mean exactly 3x24 hours. Jesus was indeed in the tomb on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
