The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Is it heretical to claim that quality in music/visual arts is a purely subjective trait?

What about human forms? Is it heretical to claim that beauty in human faces and bodies is a subjective trait?

I don't think so. God is certainly objective, but we ourselves don't always have the mind of God on all things.. unless revealed to us. And he hasn't revealed specific artforms (not that I know of). He has only given sufficient knowledge to be saved and how his church is on earth.

Plato might've been right in recognizing a world of Ideals, but that doesn't mean he or any of us know them.

So there is no base in claiming that gothic church buildings are superior to modern ones, that organs sound better than guitars or that healthy people are prettier than obese people?

I have a very simple argument in favor of objective human beauty.

The Bible calls Absalom and other characters handsome

2 Samuel 14:25 NASB — Now in all Israel was no one as handsome as Absalom, so highly praised; from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head there was no defect in him.

According to 2 Tim 3:16, and according to the books of Samuel internally, this is God's word, not an opinion of the human writer.

Therefore;

Objective beauty exists since it is recognized by God.

Excuse the changing IDs.. same anon here.

I'm a guitar player myself so I might be biased on that. But go to any accapella based liturgy and hear the glory of the instrument God gave us. An organ or a guitar alike can't compare. If there's anything that meets the requirements of objectivity, that would be it.

I don't know what you mean by modern buildings. It's hit and miss and there's nothing distinctive that comes to mind. They're all pretty eclectic and take from a variety of influences. I certainly don't think gothic is ideal though. I'd say the Renaissance and Byzantine classical styles are superior, but that's just me. The earliest churches were in houses in the middle of nondescript neighborhoods - yet the church has never been stronger. And our Lord himself was born outdoors, with no better lodgings than animals. Yet this is how he chose to "tabernacle among us". And there isn't a more beautiful scene celebrated in our church. And possibly even the secular world recognizes it as well.
