The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

NO DENOMINATION FIGHTING

Like a lot of you, I'm lost, and I'm sick of hearing debates and arguments. My discernment is so flawed. I'm coming away from 2 years of being involved in a cult-like branch of Christianity, and I want to hear what some of you guys keep in mind for discerning truth. No arguments, no talking points, please. Just your personal experience.

I just left a church because the teaching was aberrant and the members weren't working. I had a number of gripes, but foundationally I did not see that the gospel was held in high enough esteem to perform evangelism.

Here's how I discerned the proper course:

>Challenged my doctrine regarding evangelism against the scripture

>Discussed it at length with the pastor

>Asked my professor for advice

>Prayed

>Prayed with others

>Sought counsel from spiritual partner

>Talked to parents

>Waited 2 weeks

We had a meeting with the pastor and we've broken fellowship, and I'm very confident I made the right decision. Really the foundation of it is seeing the scripture as supreme in every conclusion, and being aware enough to recognize that sometimes there are several good competing arguments based in scripture.

Raised Roman Catholic, baptized and confirmed. Now I'm Orthodox Christian. Go to a Serbian church. I'm going to be Chrismated (hurray!).

If you feel confused don't be worried. The first time I went to an Orthodox church I took the Eucharist when I wasn't yet Chrismated, I felt so bad and the entire church looked at me like an idiot. But I'm sure one day I'll look back on it and laugh. God loves us.

I was so tempted to walk away, to never come back to that church out of shame but I didn't.

Anyway before that I was in a post Vatican II, progressive RC church that loved modernity and equality and all these things the early church weren't about. They were good people but truth is most important, not community.
