Do I actually have to discipline myself to acquire the healthy habits Sirach lays out?

As someone who has been consistently working on this, the simple way is to isolate a passage, for me it has usually been Sirach 3:1-16 for respect of parents, and train yourself to fulfill it by reading it often and when the situation comes for you to use it, you'll have the choice. Choose it, and you'll get into the habit. Rinse and repeat for the whole book.

Sirach is like a bad version of Proverbs.

The first step is obedience, the counterweight of pride. Ergo, seek instruction from proper authority.

Sirach has a ton of social instructions that are incredibly wise, and would help Protestants quit being jerks. Seriously.

Well, when you put it like that it's hard to recommend something. Start off with the obvious; go to bed a little hungry, don't drink booze, and don't oversleep and try not to whack off. Quit vidya delete all your games and give them away, get a website blocker and block all pornography. Also don't use social media, social media usage will send you straight to hell. Keep Facebook only to text people for free if you must.

Establish a prayer rule, and keep a journal. Optional is get a memento mori.

That's all I can think of.

Still using the handicapped Bible, fam?

I'm slowly to a greater degree and more frequently following Sirach's rules. Is this kind of gradual improvement normal or am I a screwup and supposed to instantly follow it perfectly?

db7f87  No.776964

It is normal, and it is nearly impossible without grace and a special situation to instantly follow it. Keep going anon, and may God bless your efforts.

Anon, wisdom is given during prayer.

James 1:5 “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

I can confirm. This works. Pray for wisdom, it will be given to you. Have faith! Prayer is absolutely essential.

Also, just to be clear, imo this has to prayer but coupled also with reading the scriptures. And the reason is I think because at least for me scripture is needed to listen to God in addition to talking to him. In my experience, prayer + scripture is highly correlated with understanding and understanding with the removal of fear and resolving whatever conflict is on my mind right then. If the question is not resolved, add more scripture and more prayer. Easier said than done, of course. But over the course of my life , meditating on scripture during prayer has been extremely useful in a very practical way. Every single chapter in the Bible has layers and layers of meaning in it.

Another thing that will probably sound weird, but I would also recommend taking especially seriously bible verses or passages that are “given to you” by someone else or that you encounter during moments when you are actively trying to follow God’s will or trying to learn more about God (ie your Daily devotional that day, the one that appears in the church on Sunday , the one recommended to you personally by some spiritual elder or something…etc etc). Reading those psssages , Combined with prayer, has helped me a lot of times (a crazy number of times, actually) to recognize why I have received certain things…and after Prsyer and reflection on it I a lot of times am goven to understand (what an interesting phrase!) something about that passage that is exactly perfect for me right then. I honestly feel almost uncomfortable talking about things like this because the church says so little about experiences like this — at least from what I’ve been able to tell (I am somewhat newish)— but I have to say for me this honestly has worked, it really has. A crazy number of times, too. I use the word “crazy” only because of how it will probably sound , but I don’t feel like that any more , The number of times this has occurred is astonishing and the number of times and the amount of practical advice I have taken away has truly built my faith hugely.
