The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

How does one achieve this? Are not all actions we take inherently self-interested? This idea was also basically present in a book I recently read "The Dark night of the Soul". You love God out of himself, not out of your gain by doing so (or primarily so).

Also, as a side question, are there any good arguments/resources against the secular psychology idea that all actions are self interested, and that all actions are primarily driven, at their most base levels, by sexual desires? It seems that every psych class I ever take preaches this.

Pray for a hatred of sin, and a desire for self mortification.

but even then, couldnt one argue that its still a selfish act since it in the end is toward your benefit, since that is aiding you in salvation? Maybe even if only subconsciously?

I know much of the Freudian subconscious stuff is not highly looked upon in Christian circles, and likewise I myself do not believe it, but I also have no counters to it really. For somewhat of an example (this isnt entirely dealing with "subconsciousness") I saw an atheist poster once saying that Christians only say "God bless" since it gives us pleasure to say such, dopamine and all, so pretty much the same argument that some say in support of no-fap: its all the dopamine, chemicals, etc. How do you refute such modes of thinking?

I had written a lot more to this, but now am thinking that Im just over thinking it all too much, maybe I am, maybe Im not, but either way I shall take your advice.

I don’t mind taking pleasure in an outward display for Jesus Christ.

Tempered with understanding, you should love yourself and desire your salvation. Again, tempered with understanding. If we are called to be like Christ (and God), and Christ (and God) loved all men so much that He was willing to be crucified for our sake, then so too must we be will to be crucified for our sake, which means we must love all men including ourselves. Understanding the fullness of love is a part of the life in Christ we must go through, and is not something that can be taught. But apart of this is indeed somewhat self-serving.

Another way of viewing it is to ask what fundamentally a choice is. Do we do something for the unconscious reason or the conscious reason? Much like pre-fall Adam and Eve, they did the things for God unconsciously, but after the fall did things for themselves unconsciously. Now we must strive to become consciously God-loving, even if we struggle with the unconscious selfish desire. This is a very particular state. A man who is aware of his unconscious desire can truly say he chooses to do good, even if that unconscious desire tries to corrupt the good. In other words, a choice can only be done if you are aware and have the faculty to deny the alternative. Furthermore, as a Christian, your inner rebellion is something we must all struggle with and ask for forgiveness for. I apologize if this is rambling, but this is a very interesting topic and one I not only find important, but enjoyable to think about.

>How does one achieve this?

Practice. Really. That "simple".

You will become better at it the more you try.
