The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I have been reading the Iliad lately and I can't help but notice that the God of the Bible isn't much different from other gods in mythological texts. Like how is the God of the Bible unique other than he demands sole worship? All other aspects of him seem pretty much the same as other deities in the ancient world. Yahweh is called Father, well so is Jove. The way of praying is the same. There are also animals sacrifices. Seriously just replace Jove with Yahweh and you couldn't tell the difference. Also read something like the Mesha Stele, it reads very much like the OT and it even has Chemosh triumphing over Yahweh. This is giving me doubts. Is the Bible really just like any other ancinet mythological religious text? Sorry I just need help discerning.

>high school kid that has never read a Bible and is now reading Iliad as his introductory English Lit class project

The fact you think Jupiter and the biblical God are even slightly similar at all belies your illiteracy. Lurk for at least 2 years before you post.

Name one trait of Yahweh (and not his followers) that is even remotely similar to Jupiter.

Jupiter: literal whore who likes ladyboys

Yahweh: no physical sexual interaction of any kind, as sex is only a dim reflection of His love for the beings created in His image, and His bride is the Church.

Given that Zeus starts the Trojan War, sending thousands of young men to their pointless deaths on behalf of a woman, just because he wouldn't man up and judge at a beauty contest, is literally doing the exact opposite of everything Jehovah would have done. Zeus' actions make the world and the sufferings it contains into a sick and pointless parody and he cares not a wit for mortals. The God of the Bible however is one of justice (Ezekiel 18:23)

How can you even say that?

They couldn't be more different. The pagan gods are like super heroes.

Warn me if those gods always were, always are and always will be gods.

God is the absolute being. The existance and the cause of IT. The maker of everything there is and without him things cannot be. He is infinite, pure spirit, the supreme good and love, the absolute justice… Even Aristoteles and Plato (although not perfectly) realised that.

Jesus Christ/Jahveh is the only one that can say: I AM WHO I AM.

Greek gods don't even try to approximate something like that. They are gods of aspects. i.e. fertility, lightning, the sea, etc.. The God of the Bible is called the Almighty for a reason.

What the winnie the pooh is that and why should we care?

I can write my own fiction where I can beat everyone as well.

>All the pagan worshipers believed that Man was an accident.

Either that, or playthings.. like with the Sumerians. People sometimes raise parallels with the Eden story that the Bible shared. But in Sumer, the garden was created FOR the gods. And men were slavish keepers of the garden, to please the gods. Until Enki, the reptile god, sparked a rebellion using the humans.

Strange parallels, I agree.. but in the Bible story, man is gifted with God's image, given dominion, and not a slave. And it was the reptillian who deceived them, rather than liberated them.

One could argue the sumer story is a corruption of the history of Adam and Eve.

And if the devil had the gentile nations in his power he would do good in inverting the roles.

Yes, I suspect as much. Other than that, Abraham was Sumerian himself. And his dad (Terah) actually means "priest". It could very well be that Abraham was a breakaway from this corrupt system and when God called him to create a new breakaway civilization, he corrected him on the truth. Perhaps he even convinced his father, since Terah originally left with him.

It could be very well the case.

Since Noah shit went bad (once again lol) and of course it's natural to assume people twisted the history told by their forefathers.

Then God told Abraham the real story or didn't and revealed it only to Moses.

In any case, it's fun to speculate a little about filling in the gaps. It seems to be an old pastime. There is an apocryphal text (Jubilees, I think?.. which Koran itself sniped from) that touches on some of this. Where apparently Abraham worked in an "idol shop" run by his dad. And one day, smashed them. Then apparently had a confrontation with the leaders and Abraham was called on by God to flee.

It's probably fiction, of course, but interesting that we've been speculating this long.

Sumer, btw, could be said to be root of Greek gods.. via the Hittites.. who then spread their influence to Greece and elsewhere. So Greeks are just getting a mangled version of their own idols. But the Bible has an OG in Abraham.

Tbh I'd like to see a movie on Abraham (made by Mel Gibson) it could even include some of this stories to fill the gaps as long as it didn't go against the faith.

>Sumer, btw, could be said to be root of Greek gods.. via the Hittites.. who then spread their influence to Greece and elsewhere.

Well it can be said that everyone in the word except the Jews were polytheists because they came from the same stock.

Its impressive that everyone else had basically the same theological beliefs (only the myths changed or sometimes got readapted) except the Jews. Even in Zoroastronism we see the belief in two gods, one good and a evil one in an approach to monotheism probably influenced by Jewish beliefs.

And history tells us the first civilization was in sumeria so it makes sense, and besides mankind was kinda confined there due to the recent flood that killed everyone.
