Just guessing here, I'm no theologian. Wasn't that the old law same as forbidding the Levites to eat shellfish because back then proper shellfish preparations are unknown and stuff? So if I am to hazard a guess then it's because somehow people didn't clean themselves well enough, especially men, so they are to be circumcised because nobody likes a weiner full of mold.

Shows the obedience to God, circumcision of the flesh. And with the New testament, we now have the circumcision of the heart.

Biblical circumcision is not at all as destructive as the kind commonly practiced in America today. Biblical circumcision is not a hygiene thing as the foreskin still covers the majority of the glands.

This, God also used it to distinguish his people from other peoples, as he did with the law.

The penis is the part of the body that passes on human life, and by extension sin, to the next generation. Circumcision was a symbol of binding this sin. However since the Crucifixion we bind sin in a more personal way(this is what is meant by circumcision of the heart) so act circumcision is no longer necessary. Read the Epistle of Barnabas.

That's not a Gnostic text. It was written by a different Barnabas than the one mentioned in the Bible, but the guy is still regarded as a Church Father.

I'm thinking you're confusing religions here mate.

Wasn't ancient circumcision just more like a small cut in the foreskin than full foreskin removal?

That said, I've always had a silly mental image of the Hebrews having a circumcision patrol that literally stops people in the middle of the street to do a penis inspection.

Circumcision was only a thing done in the old law to distinguish jews from gentiles and it shouldn't be done anymore

Maybe examine the gnostic texts to know the difference. It's obvious when you see it. They definitely jump out.

Barnabas is simple, vanilla, early church writing.

Only Jews were ordered to as part of the old covenant. The one that has been replaced by the new. Also

He goes so far in verse 12 to say he wishes people telling you to still do it would cut their whole thing off.
