The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Now before I get into the topic of this thread I want to make some clarifications.

1. I believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to God and that it is the holy spirit that lead me to this conclusion and im not trying to making a shallow skeptic observation to debunk churches

2. I will recall events as they happened as best I can remember.

A while back I had an acquaintance who went to a certain church (apparently its doctrine fell along the lines of Pentecostal but from my own investigation it seemed more along the lines of the "feelgood" Joel osteen tipe drivel)

It was a pretty large church, in modern days church climate this wasent out of the ordinary although it is heretical.

While me and 2 friends of mine were talking one of them that went to the church said church and after a few consecutive weeks of going there he mentioned that people from the church had approached him offering "true salvation" which was "taught" in classes after hours, he had decided to go elsewhere.

This seemed odd to me but I just shrugged it off since he couldve misinterpreted what they meant.

Later the first friend I mentioned started becoming closer since I sometimes got a ride from him and we would strike casual conversation, we also went to the same college class but we didint really interact until later.

He started coming late for classes maybe about 30 minutes at first and then later it became an hour and then 2 hours. We had a small class and the college I went to was very strict on attendance. He just kept making the excuse that overslept. Later I would hear that it was because he was attending 5am meetings at this church As well as 6pm everyday 247. I felt as if it wasent really any of my business but my interest was peaked so in the following months I did investigation on the place finding out the following.

Most of the people that went there were middle upper class and upwards

The main pastor made about 100k $ profit a week

younger people who join there "classes" often entered into a 2 year "stay on" thing that roughly costs around a college fee, some sources say that they were promised a theological degree but it cant be verified

Anyone that attended these "classes" were immediately called if they were late for church and asked a reason.

These seem like warning lights to me but what do you think?

Sounds like some serious red flags. Is it a charismatic church?

As far as I could gather they claimed to be Pentecostal but they had the tendency of telling people exactly what they want to hear without actually preaching anything other than "speak things it into being" and "nice guy Jesus" (see pic above), "give money and you will get be rewarded with a lot of money" etc it is heretical yes, a lot of churches today have the same sort of predisposition.

>Pentecostal

Doesn't surprise me. Definitely sounds like a cult. Tell your friend to run, not walk, away from that organization.

>speak things it into being

that's a teaching associated with the 'Word Of Faith' movement headed up by such luminaries as Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland, and yes; Joel Osteen

they hold that they are 'small gods' who like Christ whom spoke creation into existence, can 'name and claim' what they want and speak 'health and wealth' into their lives

this is more akin to the eastern concept of 'Visualisation' found in some Hindu and Buddhist schools - where one draws on their inner divinity to solve issues and conform reality to the way one would prefer - rather than any historically orthodox Christian doctrine which would look to God to supply what one needs, with a posture of humble submission to His will and a peaceful contentment even if one lacks physical or financial security

one might feel sorry for such folks as are ensnared in this 'Prosperity Gospel', but it should be noted that the Scripture warned even the very early church that such apostate teachers would rise from within their ranks; ravenous wolves whose god is their appetite, who preach for selfish gain

and moreover, the same Scripture says that in the latter times people would draw unto themselves such teachers who 'tickle their ears' and promise them such pleasures of the flesh; so i think there is a strong argument to say that people who attend such congregations are not so much the victims one might think, but are in fact complicit with this particular aspect of Antichrist

if it's in your power to warn your acquaintance that he is joining himself to doctrines of devils, it would be worth it so as to have a clear conscience toward God, but unless The Lord opens his eyes and grants him repentance from following the lusts of his flesh, he will likely continue in that path; demonstrating that he was never a true follower of Christ

try leaving. The response you get is the textbook test of being in a cult.
