I'm relatively new/inexperienced as a christian but i will give it a shot. Any more experienced Christians feel free to correct any errors/oversights i may make.
In the Beginning God made everything including man and animals. Man were supposed to be sinless creatures however after Satan (the embodiment of evil) tricked Eve into eating of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil as while as convincing Adam to do the same. This allowed man to come up with their own morals separate from the morals of God. With these newfound morals man could now sin, with the eating of the fruit being the original sin as God commanded Adam and Eve (the first humans) not to eat the fruit. Since humans now not only could sin but had a sinful nature both Adam and Eve were kicked out of the garden of Eden which was an earthly paradise.
Sin is basically a transgression against God's law which all men have in their hearts. We all know deep down what is right and wrong as we were made in God's image however now transgressing against those laws and committing evil has become second nature to man. Not only are sins evil but they almost always have major physical affects on someones body. Gluttons suffer from obesity, perverts suffer from disease, wrathful conquers often die in battle etc.
Death is the natural consequence of sin. Also the souls in hell are considered "dead" despite being conscious. Thus contrary to popular belief hell is not necessarily punishment as much as it is the natural consequence that sinners create for themselves. All men weave what they sew and thus all men besides Jesus Christ deserve hell as all men besides Jesus Christ are sinners. Now Jesus Christ is God the son who is a separate being from God the father and the holy ghost. All three however are God and their is only one God. This is the most confusing part of Christianity for most newcomers and i still haven't quite learned it however the important part is to remember that they are three distinct persons while still being one singular God.
So God the Son came down to earth in the form of Jesus Christ. He preached many popular christian doctrines such as living for God, loving your neighbor, not committing adultery and many other doctrines that resonates in mans heart. He also preformed many miracles like walking on water, multiplying Bread and Fish, curing a mans blindness, and even bringing a man back from the dead. He also preached that He was the Son of God and God at the same time, stating that he and God were one.
Jesus was then taken by the Romans to be executed for the crime of calling himself God. He was tortured and nailed to a cross. Besides him was the thief on the cross a man who had lived a life of sin and was not a christian before his Crucifixion. However when this thief saw Jesus he exclaimed that although his own execution was warranted, that Jesus had done nothing wrong. He pronounced his faith in Jesus and made on final plea for Jesus to remember him when he entered his kingdom. This thief who had never once been to church, been baptized(of water he was baptized of desire/blood), or (probably) participated in religious activities at all. This thief who admits to living a horrible life and that his execution was just punishment begged for Christ to remember him. With this one pronouncement of his faith Jesus assured him that they would be together in paradise today. Jesus then died for our sins, so that any who truly believe in him may receive eternal life in God's kingdom.
So basically we need God to free us of our sinful nature and the natural consequences of our sin. We do this by having faith in our lord and savior Jesus Christ. We go to church so we can learn to worship and have faith in Jesus properly as well as have companionship with our brothers and sisters in Christ. We pray for repentance so that God may understand how deeply we regret our sin and wish to submit to his will. We can still sin even after being baptized because Although the holy spirit is an amazing help and guide we are still humans with free will and thus Sin is inevitable. It is simply who we are since we ate of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. The point of it all is redemption for our evil through the amazing forgiveness and grace of God. Through faith we are redeemed.
Like i said i am also pretty new to Christianity so if you see a mistake please correct it, the last thing i would want to do is give any false information to someone seeking Christ. I just thought i could help since i was in a similar position not too long ago.
