The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I came across this earlier. These old "paraphrases" say some amazing things (they come in many flavors.. half paraphrase, half commentary.. many which started being created post-Exile, when Jews lost touch with Hebrew and needed instruction). It's as if pre-rabbinic Israel testified to many of the same ideas as the New Testament. It's all lost in what is passes off as Judaism now.

Targums saw the "Word" or "Angel of the Lord" as some kind of manifestation of God.. just as Church Fathers always testified (that it was the pre-incarnate Jesus).

Targum Jerusalem Gen 16:7-16

"7 And the Angel of the Lord found her at the fountain of waters in the desert; at the fountain of waters which is in the way to Chagra. 8 And He said, Hagar, handmaid of Sara, whence comest thou, and whither dost thou go? And she said, From before Sara my mistress I have escaped. 9 And the Angel of the Lord said to her, Return to thy mistress, and be subject under her hand. 10 And the Angel of the Lord said to her, Multiplying I will multiply thy sons, and they shall not be numbered for multitude. 11 And the Angel of the Lord said to her, Behold, thou art with child, and thou wilt bear a son, and thou shalt call his name Ishmael, because thy affliction is revealed before the Lord. 12 And he shall be like the wild ass among men: his hands shall take vengeance of his adversaries, and the hands of his adversaries be put forth to do him evil; and in the presence of all his brethren shall he be commingled, and shall dwell. 13 And she gave thanks before the Lord whose Word spake to her, and thus said, Thou art He who livest and art eternal; who seest, but art not seen! for she said, For, behold, here is revealed the glory of the Shekina of the Lord after a vision."

[Jerusalem Commentary. 13 And Hagar gave thanks, and prayed in the Name of the Word of the Lord, who had been manifested to her, saying, Blessed be Thou, Eloha, the Living One of all Ages, who hast looked upon my affliction. For she said, Behold, Thou art manifested also unto me, even as Thou wast manifested to Sara my mistress. 14 Wherefore she called the well, The Well at which the Living and Eternal One was revealed; and, behold, it is situate between Rekam and Chalutsa.]

Exodus 3:13-14

"And Mosheh said before, the Lord, Behold, I will go to the sons of Israel, and say to them, The Lord God of your fathers hath sent me to you: and they will say to me, What is His Name? What shall I say to them? And the Lord said unto Mosheh, He who spake, and the world was; who spake, and all things were. 14 And He said, This thou shalt say to the sons of Israel, I AM HE WHO IS, AND WHO WILL BE, hath sent me unto you.

[Targum Jerusalem. 13 And the Word of the Lord said to Mosheh, He who spake to the world, Be, and it was; and who will speak to it, Be, and it will be. 14 And He said, Thus shalt thou speak to the sons of Israel, EHEYEH(1) hath sent me unto you.] 15 And the Lord said again unto Mosheh, Thus shalt thou speak to the sons of Israel, The God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Izhak, and the God of Jakob, hath sent me unto you. This is His Name for ever, and this is His Memorial to every generation and generation."

That's because Christianity is the heir of the Covenants.

Indeed. I'm just fascinated now what it may have been like to live before and during Jesus' time, where they apparently heard Targums like this in the synagogue next to the Hebrew readings. They would have been familiar with language like the opening of John's Gospel apparently. The idea of God as the Word was normal to them once. I only quoted two passages, but they're all over the place.

>Shekina

I have a problem with this word. Usually Shekina is treated as God's "feminine half".

That's some kabbalah thing. It just means "dwelling". Apparently the word for Tabernacle (Temple) is "mishkan" and both derive from the same root. It's God's presence, like that felt in the temple.
