>There was no capitalism in the middle ages anon.
The Pope has much more luxury to live in today.
>And the pope has no goods to give away. Maybe 20 bucks on his wallet.
Maybe, maybe not. The Vatican is another matter.
>when the Catholic Church is the biggest charity in the world.
In all honesty, charity is pointless. Donating shoes, bread, and other single use goods is useless. If anything, it leads to people growing accustomed to receiving stuff without any work of their own. You might lighten up someone's day, but it doesn't help them in the long run. People have to perform labor in order to receive goods, whether that labor be surviving in a literal jungle or a high rise office. All big corporations and such only use charity to boost their PR. If they actually gave a damn about anyone, they would teach them skills that can keep them fed for a long time, not just one day. This would be counter-productive to their goals though, since they don't want potential competition in the future, only some hungry mouths to feed from time to time with 0.01% of their fat accounts. It makes them look good and it encourages others to do the same. Any charitable church is no different in this regard. They're using hungry mouths to attract devotees. It's dishonest and shameful.
