The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Nimrod is mentioned four times in the Bible. 3 of those times it emphasizes how he's a mighty hunter or mighty one in the Earth.

Why does it say it that way and why does it matter?

Was he a world dictator of all the living humans at the time? Is the fact that he ruled in the location that would be later known as Babylon relevant?

The same word "mighty one" (gibbor) is used to describe the giant sons of the fallen angels in Genesis 6. That, and the fact that his name most likely means "rebellion" (derived from the Hebrew "mered"), draws a parallel between the rebellion of the Sons of God in Genesis 6 and the rebellion of humanity in Babel. He may also be related to the constellation Orion (the hunter) in some way.

He was known as Odin in he's later years.

Was, he died in the last movie.

Elaborate, please.

He's first mentioned near the Babel story, so traditional teaching has associated him with that in particular: That of the world's first Strongman/Dictator who tried to create a one world government. Extrabiblical writings also associated Nimrod with Babel directly. In short, he's a template for tyrants and antichrists.

I've never heard that before, but that guess is as good as anyone's. I think a lot of gods, demigods, and titans have common origins though.

I would say that since Abraham (and thus, the first Israelites) came from Sumer, it's tied to their traditions especially. A good candidate is Enmerkar.. just for being a similarly legendary military leader in Sumer. Whose story ALSO mentions mankind splitting due to a confusion of languages/tongues. And the "kar" in Enmerkar's is actually Sumerian for Hunter.

Oh good, some Anons on this board are aware of the Sumerian origins of our religion.

It's not "origins" so much that Abraham was Sumerian. And was called to flee and create a breakaway civilization.

Abraham's own father was Terah, which actually means "Moon Priest" in Sumerian. Aprocryphal books say that his father created idols in his homeland and a young Abram destroyed them. It was then that the one God called him and told him to leave.

Muslims also use this same story btw.

Also, additional info on Enmerkar: In Hebrew and Sumerian, the spellings for Nimrod and Enmerkar are similar. NMR and NMRD. Except the "D" means "Rebel" in Hebrew and is a probably a play on the original Enmerkar name, I think.

Doh. Wait, maybe Terah doesn't mean that. I forgot where I got that from. I think it just means Priest. But Ur, the city he was from, was where the temple of the moon god Sin was. Maybe I got these two confused.

Considering that he's barely mentioned, I doubt he's very important.

I'm curious about the "mighty hunter" or "mighty one in the Earth"

God put that in there for a reason.

I think it was just an identifier that people of various regions were aware of, through legends or whatnot. Maybe a lot of different people simply knew him as the "Hunter". I just propose that it could have been Enmerkar, because Sumer predates all of them.

Enmerkar is really spelled out seperately in the Lords of Arrata. "Enmer Kar". Enmer the Hunter.

Second, if you notice after Noah and the Ark landed.. and God created a covenant with him (the rainbow), then this was the FIRST time that God officially said men and beasts were at odds, and that humans would feed off of animals. So it's interesting that a Mighty Hunter ends up on the scene not long after.

"And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things." -Genesis 9:2,3

Maybe legends abounded when some guy (i.e. Nimrod) was well known for killing all kinds of animals (in addition to just hunting and conquering men as well).

There was also a Sumerian god named Ninurta.. an archetype of hunters. Maybe Nimrod was the model for this guy? Or maybe he was the model for Nimrod first? Later on, the Assyrians still worshipped him. See pic.
