The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

So what part of canon law is essential for me to read as a Lay Christian.

What edition in your opinion is most valid?

This is a serious query, please no flame.

Not Catholic, but canon law is for bishops to handle. You don't really have a reason to look at it unless you plan to join seminary or you want to have Internet debates.

99% of canon law is administrative. Who can do certain administrative actions, what they can do, etc etc.

The only part you need to look into is your rights as a lay catholic, which us found in book 2, part 1.

Book 4 covers sacraments and it would be good to look over too, however not necessary.

You can find the whole code here

No canon law is more sort of bureaucratic stuff, what your looking for is moral theology.

There are a couple books on that but the patron of moral Theolgioans is St. Alphonsus Ligouri and his moral theology (considered the summa of moral theology) has been translated recently.

But for more general intro stuff I've heard great things about this

https://www.amazon.com/Morality-Catholic-Servais-P-Pinckaers/dp/1587315157

but a good catechism will cover most of it , I reocmmend this

https://sensusfidelium.us/bible-catechesis/the-catechism-explained-fr-francis-spirago/

if you scroll down you'll see overview of all the commandments and stuff

If you want something from St. Alphonsus he also has a useful summary in this book

https://www.goodcatholicbooks.org/books/alphonsusworks15.pdf

For actaully sort of practical stuff for what you do, an examination of conscience which is basically a list of sins to ask yourself if you've done is acutally probably the most useful.

This is a fantastic and very in depth book on it, you can find some shorter/less detailed stuff if you google for them.
