The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

I am under debt of $2000 which I admit is my fault for not terminating my ISP when I left my apartment after high school. Fortunately my country's law is lenient enough such that any debt of that amount can only be settled without any lawyers and is not a criminal case. Just to be clear, I have the financial capability to pay settle this debt. However, the debt collector is demanding double this amount because they say that this cover their own expenses of having to track me down and "legal consultation" fees. Even worse for nearly a few months now, these debt collectors had been harassing my family, spamming them with calls and SMS threats of legal action and jailtime if I dont pay up. They also sent a few letters to my parents' address(I live elsewhere but I visit them on weekends).

Now, I am more than willing to settle this debt. However I am just not happy with the debt collecting agency charging me twice the amount and constantly harassing my family. My lawyer uncle suggest that I actually ignore this and wait for another year when any attempt to settle the debt in court is impossible, as the legal term limit is passed by then. But, my conscience is bugging me. It tells me that I have to pay my ISP the bill. But I am so scared that if I go to their customer service, they would charge me the same double amount and even pursue legal action.

What should I do? Should I go for $4000 which would make me financially tight, or wait it out?

I'd tell the debt collector to gtfo, frankly. Negotiate with him, at worst.

>What should I do?

You follow your own Lawyer-Uncle's advice!!

>My lawyer uncle suggest that I actually ignore this and wait for another year when any attempt to settle the debt in court is impossible, as the legal term limit is passed by then. But, my conscience is bugging me.

You DO NOT owe them $4,000. You owe the original creditor $2,000 and maybe something for expenses and interest. The debt agency is just shaking you down. This is what they do. They are parasites who feed on the misery and misfortune and in your case stupidity of the world to profit from. I cannot stress this enough: you owe what you owe, you do not owe what this debt collector says you owe.

>I am so scared that if I go to their customer service, they would charge me the same double amount and even pursue legal action.

If there's a debt collector involved, the original creditor has abandoned all interest. Talk to Lawyer-Uncle, but I don't think they'll care to hear from you because they've sold the debt.

Let me rephrase that: they'd LOVE to hear from you, so they can get their money twice, but you need only pay once.

Still, that's worth a phone call to see if they can call-off their wolf if you pay precisely what you owe plus some minor fees. Worst case scenario is they ask for your new address so as to issue the summons. Lol, nope.

Lawyer-up, my friend. Always good to have a lawyer in the family.

Also, how the flaming winniethepooh do you rack-up $2k worth of charges for forgetting an ISP connection. This sounds like a shakedown to begin with, but whatev's.

Quality advice.

Thanks for your advice. I will be heeding my uncle's advice on this. This incident made me regret not going to law school instead. Now I have a boring job in sales.

You wanna know why? It's because somehow it was operational for like around six months. I can't be too sure as all I am told is the original debt owed is to that amount, but the debt agency wants to get some interest.I know I should had arranged to have the service terminated but at the time I was busy as I had to pack and sort my trip overseas out.

If all goes well, all the debt collector can do is just send in more threats but do nothing. So far this appear to be what they are doing as they threatened legal action if I didnt pay it up by the 27th October. Nothing happened yet and all they did was just called me and read out the same demands on their letter, which I promptly ignored and hung up

$2000 is a dubiously high amount. Remember the sin in question is defrauding a worker of their wages, which is a sin that cries out to heaven for vengeance. The question is did you actually defraud the worker of his wages? You were not using the service and the worker was not diligent to ensure you were not using it but rather let the bill rack up an obscene amount. Did the worker suffer loss as a result of you not informing them or was there no loss in them providing an unused service?

I would pray and negotiate with the ISP directly as to whether they incurred any costs from providing the service, and then pay them only the costs, not the market rate of use as you did not use it.

Whatever you do listen to your lawyer-uncle, this guy >>724474 here and by no means seriously DO NOT GIVE HIM ANY MONEY.

If all gets to court he'll just say you didn't give him shit and you'll have to pay even more.

Put every transaction on paper and pay per bank transaction to have proof of payment.
