Jesuits were an order started by the Catholic church in order to convert the Newly discovered continent. The missionaries of that time were amazing.
There is a church my family often makes pilgramage to here in Ontario Canada that's devoted to the Jesuit mission to convert the Natives. (pic related, it's the Church in Midland Ontario)
There were stories of them going to the Hurons one after another to be killed. After enough of them were killed and they kept coming, this won the respect of the Hurons and converted them.
One Jesuit said that as he was travelling through what was then a new uncharted land he saw a vision of a great big giant cross in the sky. And the cross had enough room for all the martyrs who wanted to suffer for Christ.
Today parts of the Jesuit order has become liberal. But they aren't the only very liberal order in the Catholic church and they aren't the most liberal.
It's also important to remember that not all Jesuit groups are liberal, it's just some of them are.
