A renovation was needed. The Coptic Orthodox Church sees the monastery as their property & wanted to cover the renovations & expenses. The Jerusalem council rejected this & proposed to cover it themselves in order to maintain the status quo of this dispute. So monks protested allowing Israel to renovate & you know the rest.
