A renovation was needed. The Coptic Orthodox Church sees the monastery as their property & wanted to cover the renovations & expenses. The Jerusalem council rejected this & proposed to cover it themselves in order to maintain the status quo of this dispute. So monks protested allowing Israel to renovate & you know the rest.

This paper talks about the history surrounding the monastery & how it was Historically owned by the Coptic Orthodox Church.

This is actually because of an internal dispute among the Miaphysites themselves. The Ethiopians are negotiating to attain a Coptic monastery in Jerusalem and convert it into an Ethiopian one. These Coptic monks were protesting this and the Israeli soldiers here decided to use force against these Coptic protesters for whatever reason. There has been tension between Copts and Ethiopians in the holy land for a while now over land grabs.
