The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Has anyone read The Shepherd of Hermas? How come it's not in the New Testament? What's it about?

It's not in the canon because it is not considered directly inspired by God like the books of the Bible.

It doesn't mean it isn't an excellent and truly christian book from the sub-apostolic age.

It is extremely interesting to say the least. It was very popular in the early Church, it was very close to being deemed canon but they decided to pass on it. Still a great read though, it has a lot of familiar elements yet it also feels very different (in a good way) compared to what we find in the New Testament and other early Church works like the Epistle of Barnabas or 1 Clement or the Didache.

I read it, only reason was because I was beginning my study of the early church fathers. It's one of the earliest Christian texts outside of the bible of considerable length. It has been said that the shepherd wasn't very learned and his writing wasn't written in the best Greek. It reads kinda like the book of revelation where a lot of end time imagery is spoken of. I read it earlier this year but from what I can remember is that it isn't really giving us anything new. Just seems like amother early Christian fan fic. Only reason why I read it was because I'm a autistic completist who wanted to read every early Christian text, slowly making my way up to the post nicean fathers.

A bigger question is: Do you think the events and visions depicted in the story were real?
