The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Hi, /Christian/

I just have this problem where my commitment and dedication to God only lasts a few moments (days or weeks) then I start being self-centered again. I've always been a religious person all my life, never a time where I had a firm belief that God did not exist, or Christianity is wrong. The only problem I have is my dedication to become a very religious person only lasts when I want something from God.

For example, a couple of weeks ago, I had a very bad problem where I was almost certain it was going to end badly. I prayed to God asking for his help, promising that if he were to answer my prayers, then I would be a very good person and would try to my utmost best to be a virtuous and moral person. It seems as if my prayer was answered and there, I led a virtuous and moral life, I prayed to God constantly and always praising him. Then, as I get comfortable, I sway from my promise and indulge in immoral actions once again. The pattern repeats, and now, I want to fully try my best to be a virtuous person. How do I stop doing this?

just keep praying anon. say them in the morning when you wake up and before you go to bed. do it everyday, even if you woke up late, or tired, or just feeling lazy. say the Jesus prayer whenever you get the inclination to do so. pray when you don't want to. pray it when it's inconvenient. pray it when you don't have time. pray for other people. pray pray pray. prayer is our weapon against temptation.

nobody can make you virtuous but God, so ask Him for help all the time. You say you only pray when you want something, and then you say you want to be virtuous. It seems like the obvious thing to do is pray for mercy and virtue. Since being virtuous is a continual act or process, this means you must pray unceasingly or at least as much as you can.

I know the Jesus prayer as well as set morning/evening prayers is mostly an Orthodox tradition. but you don't have to be Orthodox to follow this advice.

Metropolitan Anthony Bloom has a book called Beginning to Pray. It really jump started my stagnant prayer life, and the other parts of my life are much better now that my prayer life is better. I haven't fapped in a month and a half, I've quit drinking for a month, and I'm on day 5 without tobacco. In addition, my other behaviors have markedly improved.

tl;dr - pray
