One thing to know is that most of them will not have you take vows as far as I know, though they'll follow a general rule (say the rule of St. Benedict). Definitely speak to your pastor about it, and also I would recommend staying where you are thinking of joining for a little bit to see how the lifestyle affects you. Most people are not cut out for it.
