Why do Catholic documents do this? I mean, not the people here, but the papers they publish, like the catechism. Just attach the bible verses they're referring to and boom the text much more clear. Protestants would be that much more open too or maybe they wouldn't given their unfair treatment of catholics, but we'll see.

Catechisms do have footnotes. Most of recent documents too. And even older, if they are re-published.

As for why they didn't - a) people trusted them to know what they talk about b) catechesis wasn't shit and even peasants knew thier Bible.
