Papal infallibility is when a pope who's not auto-excommunicated declares something under very specific circumstances, already affirmed by Holy Tradition and/or Scripture, to be an infallible dogma/doctrine.
Basically it has no real use and is a redundant term and in my honest opinion could be thrown out.
For example, no pope could ever declare gay marriage to be allowed through papal infallibility because it's a heresy.
Neither can a pope declare something infallibly when he's auto-excommunicated e.g. when he approves a heresy or sin.
The current pope could at this very moment go sit on the literal chair of St. Peter, invoke his papal infallibility and say that gay remarried cohabiting she-males could take communion and it wouldn't matter because 1) this is all confirmed heresy and sin and 2) this very statement would excommunicate himself.
