I heard a local priest is running for the state council here. I know many protestant preachers run in elections, but what is the Catholic stance on this?

Maybe with special permission from the bishop or from rome it's possible but generally I dont think this is permitted anymore

they used to be able to hold office until the 1930's i believe

It is strictly not allowed to run for political office. It's in canon 285 ;3. If he is doing so report him to your/his bishop.

Priests can hold symbolic positions but if it involves any real exercise of power it's not allowed.

I'm pretty sure 285§3 was a part of the 1983 Codex Iuris Canonici. Or did you think today is 1983?

f46515  No.696402

As of current Canon law.

Don't know if it was different in the past.

It could be part of the 1917 Code of Canon Law, but it's in Latin.

Oddly enough there are no authorized English translations, but there are 2 in Spanish. I can't find them online, though.

Have you ever met a Muslim or a Jew? They're not all magically bilingual. None of the muslims or Jews I know can functionally read Arabic or Hebrew.
