Have you ever heard of this story? It's said that they're are monks who live in the remote forests of Athos, making their appearance here and there to other monks or pilgrims occasianally.

Some say they are 7 some say 12. They pray non stop for the world and when one of them dies, another monk from Athos takes his place. It is believed that right before the events of the apocalypse begin, the invisible monks will climb to the higher mountain top of Athos and do the last liturgy there, that will sigh the end of times.

It's an athonite tradition apparently, Saint Paisios had also speaked about them

Many religions tell fairy-tales about their past. The Orthodox fairy-tale, however, encompasses past, present and future. We live in this fairy-tale and we believe it like children.

"Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it." (Mark 10:15)

Mt. Athos seems like a peaceful place

Unfortunately, modern customs require from the pilgrims to move quickly from one monastery to another. But I have had the luck to stay in one monastery for about a month and although I haven't seen anything else on Mount Athos, I've never regretted my decision to do so. It's not only peaceful there. The time goes differently. Even the long services of 4-5 hours every night don't feel long. One really feels closer to the eternity there.
