The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

As I sit around mourning the destruction of the Catholic faith by wicked secularists, I decided to tread Jacobus de Voragine's The Golden Legend, which appears to be one of the first casualties in our long cultural war.

It looks like it was discredited during the enlightenment years for playing fast and loose with a couple things, but its incredibly inspiring. And gory.

What does /christian/ think of this book?

Very good book indeed. Covers not only most important saints and the different stories about them, but also explanations about feast days. It's a long, sometimes dry, read, but worth it.

How much of it is real and how much is legend? IIRC certain people in the Church were against the book at the time because they were afraid it would cause people to become more superstitious.

Never heard of it before, looks great. Found the whole thing on libgen, high quality pdf.

I like how conversationally the author remarks about what sources like St Augustine had to say about this or that event, and especially his asides about what he personally is skeptical about. One good example is a story about St Andrew finding St Matthew, tortured and blinded by unbelievers in Ethiopia. Andrew prayed and God restored the saint's gouged-out eyes and freed him from his tormentors. The author remarks that he finds it unlikely, because why should Andrew have had such an easy time doing what the great Evangelist could have done for himself?

I don't know that everyone would agree, but I find that kind of thing story of funny.

Bad fiction being passed off as historical non-fiction undermines the faith among those who can see through the lies. In the current era this is great many people.

How to use Golden Legend to advance Christianity: Point out that when people of old produced pious stories that weren't true, you got stuff like Golden Legend. Compare and contrast to the accurate historical detail and psychological veracity portrayed in the New Testament.

>The story then goes on to describe "Magumeth (Mahomet, Muhammad)" as "a false prophet and sorcerer", detailing his early life and travels as a merchant through his marriage to the widow, Khadija and goes on to suggest his "visions" came as a result of epileptic seizures and the interventions of a renegade Nestorian monk named Sergius.

Shit, I knew Mohammed was known in Europe but this guy was spot on too.

What do Eastern Orthos think of this book? People say their histories of saints are folk tales but they don't seem to work to quash them so vigorously, as Roman Catholics have done. I talked to a OCA deacon who said such stories still retain a utility in inspiring the faithful. Is this wrong?
