Did the ascension literally happened 40 days after the resurrection because doesn't the number 40 when applied to timeline in the Bible just mean a significant period of time? For example, it rained 40 days and 40 nights during the flood, the Hebrews were in the wilderness for 40 years, Moses was on Sinai for 40 days and 40 nights. Could Jesus may have been on earth after the resurrection for longer than a literal 40 days?

Usually "40 x" means roughly "a whole bunch of x" but in the case of Pentecost that's on a specific festival 50 days after Passover.

True, but maybe Luke switched around the chronology a little because it would've flowed better. The gospels writers do this too, that's why some miracles/events happen after or before others in the gospels.

Human time is no arbiter of reality.

The number 40 has significance to Scriptual writing symbolism.

Unlike what most people think, symbol means real presence of a real essence on a real object. There's nothing unreal about a symbol.

Testing trials and their completion are linked to the number 40, spending 40 days on Earth is fullfillment of prophecy from earlier texts.
