Usually it is, but it wouldn't surprise me if Satan's demons could use it. It has natural causes, like the "falling" feeling that jerks you awake, but the modus operandi of evil spirits besides temptation is using your fears. I've read that Christians experiencing sleep paralysis often make it stop by reciting the Lord's Prayer.

There was a month or two period where I was having sleep paralysis almost every night even if I slept on my side. Seen disfigured faces come out of the walls and float towards me with a feeling of impending doom as well as auditory hallucinations. Typically I heard what sounded like very loud ambient noise, usually the sound of a washing machine going very loudly mixed with the sound of a fan and / or TV static.

I think it is caused mostly by depression, stress, and general emotional / spiritual turmoil. At the time I wasn't a Christian and was going through a lonely and dark period.

Demons can make you imagine things but only things you already know.
