The city's name is the same as a Ukrainian name for Artemisia vulgaris, mugwort or common wormwood, which is Ukrainian: чорнобиль, translit. chornóbyl’ (or more commonly Ukrainian: полин звичайний, translit. polýn zvycháynyy, lit. 'common artemisia').

So? Was Chernobyl a prefiguration of the third trumpet or what? Is this just a coincidence or did part of Revelation happened already without us realizing?

For how bad it was I don't think Chernobyl infected one third of the waters of the world.

Serious question from someone who holds to a literal interpretation - when did the first exegetes start approaching these signs in this way? Those in the the intended audience of John's Revelation would've probably understood it in an apocalyptic way; how literally would they have taken it? I'm primarily looking for historical sources, as I haven't found anything dating before the 18th Century.

Up until a hundred years ago the general consensus has been that Revelation foretold the end of the pagan Roman Empire. It's already happened guys, the resurrection has come, is coming, and will come. It's a pattern that will repeat as we move towards God as a species but it isn't some physical doomsday scenario; it's a set of spiritual truths so that Christians are wary when we're in one of the downward slopes of civilization… like now.

Less than 100 people died directly because of the Chernobyl accident. However there were around 100,000 killed by the fearmongering - 100,000 completely healthy babies were aborted across Europe because of completely unfounded fears that they would have birth defects.

Also the literal translation of "angel" is messenger and the alarms in Chernobyl (messenger sounds) only RANG TWICE before the disaster therefore the third "angel" DID NOT SOUND.

Wormwood is artemisia absitnthium, not Mugwort which is artemisia vulgaris.
