The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

So what's /christians/ opinion on this guy (if he even existed). St. Augustine seems to think he was real and talks about him in City of God book VIII.

>The Egyptian Hermes, whom they call Trismegistus, had a different opinion concerning those demons…

>Hermes then follows out at great length the statements of this passage, in which he seems to predict the present time, in which the Christian religion is overthrowing all lying figments with a vehemence and liberty proportioned to its superior truth and holiness, in order that the grace of the true Saviour may deliver men from those gods which man has made, and subject them to that God by whom man was made.

Corpus Hermeticum somewhat argues for the trinity in some places.

It was mega popular during the Renaissance, Christianity early on also saw it as brushing up to the mysteries. Unfortunately it turned out to not be 5000 years old but instead a collection dating variously to 200 years before Christ to 100 years after in Alexandria, Egypt, which also was the place neo-platonism got its start.

It activates the almonds but its not as consistent as Christian teachings, and too world-denying. Also Charity is really not so clearly advocated, and magic is really heavily pushed, basically it does this by rejecting the validity of natural phenomena, so it gets pretty heretical.

From breifly reading some of the source texts i can already see some inconsistencies, such as some teaching pantheism, others teaching panentheism (or vauge theism).

In what ways did it influence the renaissance?

During the Renaissance, there was a huge resurgence in esotericism. Hermes is major figure in esotericism, especially in alchemy (which hit its peak in the renaissance).

The philosophy of Corpus Hermeticum in some points sounds incredibly christian, for example it teach the Supreme Godhead is three hypostasis, the Father is the Nous and the Son is Logos.

This similarity gave him fame as almost a pagan prophet of Christ, some Christian writers even believed he was Enoch or was taught by Enoch.

Another explanation is that Corpus Hermeticum is much more recent than they believed in the Renaissance. If the CH was contemporary to the first centuries of christianity, then it's simply the pagan imitating christian theology.

So, either an almost christian pagan wise man, Enoch or a disciple of Enoch, or just a pagan ripoff of christian doctrines.

Basically Alexandria was at the same time the birthplace of Hermetism, gnosticism, neoplatonism and one of the major centres of early Christianity.

It's easy to expect all sort of people teaching their own brand by mixing all these doctrines.
